Yes, I have said repeatedly, as have others like PT21, that statistically speaking, picking high in the draft yields the best chance for a team to obtain high end talent. Unfortunately for the Flyers, they picked in the top 5 of a comparably weak draft in terms of top-end talent, thus Cutter might be a nice player, but I don't think anyone thinks he is going to be the next Austin Matthews. However many experts believe there are 3 Austin Matthews caliber players in the 2023 draft, so that is the draft you want to target picking high in if you are a team like the Flyers that need to rebuild, eh...eh, I mean retool. - jd250
Auston Matthews is a generational player and a 60 goal scorer. I'm just curious why you omitted Gauthier. He's a top 5 pick.

Rubtsov is a complete bust but O'Brien is still in college hockey and has yet to play a professional game. He is a long shot but the door is not shut. Definitely not a typical path for a first rounder. - MJL
O'Brien was a slight reach by Hextall at the time he was drafted, many thought O'Brien was going to get selected late 1st round, early second. I know Boston was one of the teams that wanted him. He was always considered to be a bit of a project coming from the high school he played in, and thus it was expected his road to the NHL would be a couple years longer than the typical forward. What has set O'Brien back is his injuries. This past season his hip was the issue, a similar injury to Tanner Laczynski and Brink. When he is on the ice and locked in he is producing at a point per game pace and I think he can be even better that this. We'll find out this year at BU, if he has another year where he can't stay on the ice, I don't see the Flyers at least signing him to a pro contract. |

Do they? (Honest question)
edit:
NM found a link.
Flyers 26th since 2005 according to the Athletic. Pretty bad.
https://theathletic.com/2...est-and-worst-since-2005/ - MBFlyerfan
One of the most informative articles I read in recent times. Seems like the Athletic gets a lot of mileage simply by doing some grunt work from data in the public domain (anyone could do it).
That said, couple of observations. First, the ranking of 26th does not control for where they pick. On average, a team picking higher should get more bang for the pick (games played, pt/game, minutes played etc etc) than a team picking lower. Further down was a chart that looks at the difference between what value they should have obtained versus what they actually got. Imo, this is the far better measure of scouting success. Here, we finish 23rd.
I produce the list below for the sake of those unable to see.

Couturier is the 23rd highest paid center in the league, and the 66th highest paid player. If his cap hit were 9 million he would be 36th.
Elite players are paid much more. - MBFlyerfan
And what are the numbers if paid 10 mill? Oh he’d be 5th highest paid?
He’s a steal. Actually he should be at 11 or 12 mil. Taking his selke into a point |

It was not on purpose, I guess because he has yet to even playa college game yet, plus they want him to play center which I think might set his development back further. |

Are any of those players projected to have more than 55 points?
Gee I wonder🤔 |

Not sure where you are getting that from. No one has said anything remotely like that except maybe Gaudreau's wife's friend.
And if he were paid 10 mill he would be 15th overall, or 8th among centers.
That of course will change when Mackinnon, Draisaitl, Barzal etc gets their new deals.

So can it be confirmed by both these charts the drafting and development both suck. Is that a fir statement.

He's not paid 10M a year or anywhere close to that. |

I have never stated that Couturier is an elite player in the league.
Only in the void in your head is stating that Couturier is a steal at 7.75M clearly means he is worth 9 or 10M a year.
The stupidity continues. - MJL
Well at almost 8 mil per what would a STEAL mean. Oh wise cap expert.
Educate us on the interpretation of “STEAL” because everyone would think it means at least a mil or 2 mil. Maybe even more.
Wrong as usual. |

We’ll look at it this way
Coots previous deal I think EVERYONE would say was a “steal” so if it was a steal then by how much? A couple mil per year?
So coots making almost 8 mil on new deal and mjl cap expert claiming he’s a “steal” would obviously mean by same parameters that would be around 10 mil.
Which is an absulute joke
Projected 55 points.
But makes linemates better🤔
So laughable actually |
