This is strictly regarding the Rub pick and that draft, but its the same premise - THE BLACK HAND
All we can do is argue in hindsight. I certainly would have liked to have Debrincat from that draft. But then again so would 31 other teams I guess.

No not really. All I am saying, respectfully I may add, is that its not many games. Not enough to make any kind of final decision on how good or bad the pick was. Especially considering how many players taken before the pick have over 150 games played, and how many taken after have had less than stellar NHL careers.....so far.
My stance is that it is overstating the point that it was some sort of disastrous pick. We don't agree. It could turn out to be. But I am waiting to see what happens.

I guess you could argue that there is still time, my argument there is it’s probably going to look worse with time. We can move on, respectfully. |

Cutter isn't a world class player at the moment. He's a project.
And it's the U20, not the U18. - Tomahawk
Definitely a project.....He didn't come close to making it a hard choice to cut him from camp. He was gone before they cut the roster down to 27 guys. Cooley and Nazar were both still there, with Cooley ultimately making the team. It's understandable to say it's the age/numbers game, but the US team also chose Charlie Stramel for the roster, and he's not even eligible for the draft until next year. Bottom line is Gauthier simply wasn't good enough to make that roster this year. |

I would agree. It doesn't look good. Too many injuries and not enough progress.

Any idea when the Flyers will have a top 20 point producer in the league?
Or is this fallacy that they can win with superior motivation, and buy in still going on. |

It is a grit and sandpaper league, and the Flyers have that in spades. Winning the Deslauriers sweepstakes puts them in position to change the league back to what it once was.
The Flyers are pioneers. |

At least in the past we had guys like Lindros, LeClair, Briere, or Giroux to get excited about.
It's insulting to hear podcasts spout non stop BS about this approach that fans who have been around longer than Gritty, know is a path to nowhere.
Comcast can continue to take the support of this fanbase for granted. It's gone over very well.

Yes, I agree, I don't understand this signing, but then again I don't understand a lot of what the Flyers are doing these days. The problem with the Flyers' system is they have depth, but no real stars or I would argue potential stars. Sure Foerster, Gauthier, maybe Brink, Andrae, they can be nice players, but I don't see stars in them. The problem I continue to have with the Flyers is what is the plan to obtain at least 1 real star for the team? It clearly can't be Free Agency or Hockey trades, the Flyers had their chance this off-season but their short-sightedness killed that chance. So it has to be the 2023 draft with 3 generational players available, except Fletcher is not acting like a GM that is setting the franchise up to get one of those players. Thus I guess the plan is mediocrity, the same as it has been for over a decade!
Even if everything falls perfect for the Flyers this year, i.e. their injured players all come back and play like they can (including Ellis), and the team's identity gets a boost from Torts' coaching, the Flyers are at best a bubble team, fighting with Pittsburgh and Columbus for 4th place in the division. How does this help anything, picking 14th in a draft with 3 generational players at the top? All of this just makes no sense! - jd250
That’s just not true.
Mjl the cap expert said coots at almost 8 mil per years is a STEAL. WHICH CLEARLY MEANS HES WORTH 9 or 10 mil per year.
That means he’s a star top elite player. Because mjl knows all.
He makes his linemates better.
Obviously that in turn makes the team better.

Or is this fallacy that they can win with superior motivation, and buy in.....and a healthy roster, and better goaltending, and more offensive production, and better defensive play, and development from the youth, and a return to form or complete overhaul of playing styles for specific individuals and ND making space for everyone still going on? Fixed imo |

Couturier is the 23rd highest paid center in the league, and the 66th highest paid player. If his cap hit were 9 million he would be 36th.
Elite players are paid much more.

Believe in it if you want. The last 10 years of this same approach have gone over in spectacular fashion.
Hilarious to see the talking heads kneel before Torts as some hero, ignoring that its the same decision making management team that not only hired but retained AV when his time with the team was clearly past.
People who believe in the process, I hope they enjoy next season. The league is going to continue to laugh at what this franchise has allowed itself to become, but at least they will win a few fights right?
Retaining that old Flyer identity, is more important than modern success. Anyone who doesn't see that as reality hasn't been paying attention to this team. |

I have never stated that Couturier is an elite player in the league.
Only in the void in your head is stating that Couturier is a steal at 7.75M clearly means he is worth 9 or 10M a year.
The stupidity continues. |

What about Cutter Gauthier? He was a top 5 pick. You have repeatedly said that you need top 5 picks.
-MJL
Yes, I have said repeatedly, as have others like PT21, that statistically speaking, picking high in the draft yields the best chance for a team to obtain high end talent. Unfortunately for the Flyers, they picked in the top 5 of a comparably weak draft in terms of top-end talent, thus Cutter might be a nice player, but I don't think anyone thinks he is going to be the next Austin Matthews. However many experts believe there are 3 Austin Matthews caliber players in the 2023 draft, so that is the draft you want to target picking high in if you are a team like the Flyers that need to rebuild, eh...eh, I mean retool. |
