Is Makar in the dust somewhere? Maybe Hexy was too concerned he might turn out to be the next Bobby Orr and that would not jive with his amazing cap management strategy..

You can’t claim your GM managed the cap well when they could not win and we are still paying the price for his mismanagement today including and especially cap management. Let’s stop w the 27 was some kinda money ball genius. He sat on his hands most of the time while muzzling his entire org. Are we still defending Ron Hextall the GM here? Seriously…

You are in trouble now. Here comes Cliff to put you in your place.

Rubtsov is a complete bust but O'Brien is still in college hockey and has yet to play a professional game. He is a long shot but the door is not shut. Definitely not a typical path for a first rounder.

Do you think the Flyers sign O'Brien after the college season ends? I think it's a long shot.

You're response here is not credible. Especially cap management? Hextall did a strong job clearing up the cap. He sat on his hands most of the time because it took 3 plus years to clear up the cap and build up the prospect base. He should've sat on his hands longer. The posters description of Hextall's time is accurate.

When you combine four things out of your control (Pronger's career ending injury, a complete swing and a miss when gifted the 2nd overall pick, the early retirement of Niskanen and what appears to be the premature end to Ellis' career) with four things in their control (the inexplicable, at least in retrospect, signings of Bryzgalov, Lecavalier and Macdonald, the $250k-$500k AAV overpay to at least 4-6 players, the poor job of developing players and/or keeping them healthy enough to develop and the draft pick debacle of swapping out Ghost/Hagg for Risto/DeAngelo) you get this current team.

Let's hope we get some lottery luck next year.

It was either a yes or no answer. Did you have a date this weekend? Didn't see you pounding the keyboards as much as usual.

but what about Ellis Bill? Do they tell you anything about Ellis? Or just more of the same, no comment?

Besides the fact that Bill has stated the pick was likely Heiskanen if they went with a D man. Nobody including Joe Sakic knew Makar was going to be this good.

Sakic was reportedly disappointed when Heiskanen went before the Avs pick and had to "settle" for Makar.

I think if he stays healthy and produces like he did when he was in the lineup last season, they sign him.

Redrafting in hindsite we would have probably gotten Heiskanen because NJ would have taken Makar.

We were never going to get Makar imo.

This is most likely true but doesn't prevent fans and media belaboring he "Flyers could have had Makar" story.

And yes, Heiskanen would have been a great add to this franchise.

Well, we had him and passed, to state the obvious. I am always leery of the kids of NHLrs like Patrick because the 2nd and 3rd gens tend not to work out (Mark Howe is the exception that makes the rule). Patrick was very highly ranked but that aspect made me a little shy of taking him.

Yes, I do. He has been a strong player on a great program. Unless he gets hurt this year, I think they do. If he has a great year, I suspect he walks.

I agree 2 NHL players from a draft should be considered successful. I don't particularly care where they were drafted, but you have a much better chance the higher the picks obviously. Sanheim was drafted in the top 20, Konency just outside. York, still not proven, but looks to be a solid pick. Won't get into the Patrick thing but Rubstov and O'Brien seem to be complete busts.
- rayc16

Hard question to answer as many variables in play.

What if those 2 are always 4th line types?

If Hexy had taken Makar instead of Patrick or Heiskanen every single one of us would have lost our poop on draft day.

I love how people are now trying to pretend that they were Team Makar from Day 1.

Bill, I believe Gavin Hain has opted for a 5th year at North Dakota ( allowed due to the pandemic). So he remains Flyers property for another year.

I think they get a second round compensation pick if he goes unsigned. I'd almost rather them roll the dice on that if he has another injury ravaged, disjointed year. Plus, it would help since Chuck gives away second rounders like candy.

What do you consider a successful draft?
- rayc16

1 NHLer for every 5 picks should be an average rate.

More if you're picking multiple 1st and 2nd rounders, but still. If you aren't averaging 1 for every 5 picks you're (frank)ing up.
