Interesting analysis in the Athletic putting the Leafs right near the top of the league in contract efficiency. - Zezel
So wait the Leaf's are not the most mismanaged team in the entire league, set to be in Cap Hell for eternity with both past and present Managment teams throwing waffles at each other whilst screaming "1967, can't win a round, can't win a game 7, zamboni driver-gate" forever and ever?
It's all so confusing, like the rules here I suppose.

Interesting article, liked it.
Opinions don't always line up. Take for example Rolling Stones magazine rating Buddy Rich as the 15th best drummer of all time. I saw him play late in his career at Ontario Place. Hard to imagine there were 14 better. He's 65 when he performed this one.

He sounded like a guy who got pulled over for speeding and basically said "ya I was speeding but no other cop gives people tickets for speeding here and that's not fair".
He as much as said it's not called which is much different from flat out saying his cather didn't block the plate.
I think it's a stupid rule that the catcher can't block the plate but it's a rule and the Twin's catcher blocked the runner so that's what got called.

Amazing. Reminds me of the Beastie Boys line 'make no mistake and switch up the channel, I'm Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle'.
I have my first live music in 3 years coming up. Got a free ticket to see Phish this week. Not a fan, but I'll check it out. Then Metric with Spoon and Interpol, and Stereolab later in the summer and fall.

I mean, I wouldn't have called it blocking the plate, even if the call is technically correct. - GreatGigInTheSky
Good explanation on Blair and Barker. Catcher needs to be waiting for the the throw in a spot that provides the runner a clear path. If he needs to block the runner’s path in order to catch the ball, that’s fine. Also, once he gets the ball he’s free to block the plate. The Twins’ catcher did neither - he blocked the plate and didn’t provide a clear path.
Merrifield was smart. He said he knew how the catcher was set up and just slid directly in, knowing how the rule would be interpreted.

The rule is in place to protect guys like Sanchez from themselves. Yes, historically you could just obliterate the catcher as you come home and try to dislodge the ball - and it was the catcher's responsibility to block the plate and force you to try and do just that - which you could only do once you had the ball, mind you.
With athletes in all sports getting bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger, that play at the plate was destined to badly injure someone - like it did with Posey. If it hadn't been Posey it would have been someone else. Some of these guys are just locomotives now. In my opinion, baseball should be baseball and not a game of Drunk Red Rover.
In this play, Sanchez is blocking the plate before he has the ball. He is in the process of catching the ball, but before he has the ball, and not as a requirement of catching the ball, he blocked the plate with his leg preventing Merrifield from scoring.
By the letter of the rules - even historically - Sanchez blocking the plate before he had possession of the ball was not legal.

Phish are an excellent jam band, a modern day version of the Allman Bros or Grateful Dead. Their guitarist is excellent. I'm taking my son to see Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs at the Danforth later this month. Should be fun.

To me Sanchez was actually offering a clear path initially - while he was standing. In the act of catching the ball, but not before he had possession of the ball, he moved and dropped his knee to block the plate. Honestly, had the throw been low - like below waist level, Sanchez would have been in his right to be down on his knees to corral it - but because the throw was higher (and he clearly reached up to catch it from his kneeling position), he was positioned to block the runner and not positioned to catch the ball.
I point this out because similar plays are going to be thrown around and female doged about, but those are the distinctions: Clear path, not blocking the plate without clear possession of the ball or without clearly being in the motion of catching the ball.

The call was correct, Sanchez set up to catch the ball 2 feet in front of the plate. He didn't get pulled in front of the plate by the throw, he was already there.
Baldelli (appropriate name) probably reacted the same way many other managers would have, but publicly putting down the umpires and the league is not the smartest approach.

Funny part was him yelling at the umps who ruled for him but were overruled by New York and, yeah he should have kept his cap on
