I don't see how that could happen

it doesn't require much imagination... both Tkachuk and Huberdeau are coming off very strong seasons, if one of them lacks chemistry with his new linemates and has an underwhelming season while the other guy continues on the same production rate then the deal will automatically be interpreted as lopsided. wouldn't be the first time this kind of poop happens lol

meh, you don't judge a trade like this one on one season. there's no reason to think Tkachuk or Huberdeau will magically lose their talent. Huberdeau may even not finish the season in CGY. lets revisit this in 5 years.

I like the deal for CGY. if players do well and want stay, you extend them. if not, you trade them at the tdl for picks and prospects. if Lek brought back a 2nd and a top prospect, imagine what the return for Hubedeau will look like.
good deal for FLA too, they got the younger player signed for a long time.

at first glance it seems like the panthers could've made a better deal elsewhere, but I'm not saying it's impossible either that it turns out being a good move for both teams as well.

he will bring back the same package most rentals get. a pick, a b level prospect and maybe something else like a 3rd rd pick.

and if teams were paying attention in the playoffs last season, calgary will be lucky to get that. he was invisible against TB and a main factor in the panthers getting bounced pretty easily by tb

Huberdeau has a career 21pts in 26 playoff games, I wouldn't necessarily label him as a playoff no-show either.

yeah, it sucks but I almost prefer it that way than having them both on the same (frank)ing team... at least this way they'll also play against each other lol

I don't think OTT was never in the mix. they need a RD. (CGY might have one available for them now).
upfront their top6 is set.

with that skill level, wouldn't one of them be able to play RW..?

perhaps they never were in the conversation but folks in OTT probably at least considered the situation...

Calgary won the trade simply because they knew they had an asset that was leaving 100%, on top of that, Tkachuk pretty much was able to determine where he was going to want to go (either now or in 10 months).

So to get anything significant back is kind of mind boggling.

Cole Schwindt, and a lottery-protected first-round pick are the long-term wins, but not fair value. If they can get either of Huberdeau or Weeegar to sign (or significant pieces for them at the trade deadline), that is a clear win....

I'm not sure they get both players signed.

Quite frankly, I am surprised Calgary was able to get this many assets, and then potentially sign or trade some fo those for more asset down the line.

From Florida's perspective, it seems like they couldn't / wouldn't re-sign Huberdeau (at least at something they felt was reasonable).

But they get their guy, and signed for 8 years, so that is something.

My concern is that Florida is starting to make deal like Vegas has done, and we have seen how that gutted their team.

Tkachuk will make 9.5 M a year. Every year will be a 1M base and an 8.5M signing bonus
