Yes. Imagine if instead of having Rutta and Kap you had Nino |

It's crazy. We all can argue whether or not these 2 trades were good value but we can all agree that the Rutta signing was pointless. |

You traded 2 top 4d for 1 top 4d to clear space for cap because you signed Rutta |

Rutta, Carter and McGinn all seem like players we could do without cap wise. That could have been Nico, Milano, E-Rod instead. |

We will know tomorrow whether Kap goes for arbitration... which obviously implies a cap (no punt...) risk.

Rutta was a ball chained to Hedman's ankle. Hextall must have just looked at his stat sheet and ignored how much Rutta was playing wingman to one of the best defenseman on earth. To be fair, Rutta is serviceable. But, he's not physical, he's not a solid PK guy, and that is a lot of money to pay for a 3rd pair dman. I hope they aren't thinking he can ride shotgun with Letang. |

They're both RD's so I don't think they're thinking that. |

Quite the busy Saturday for Ron. Would never have predicted that Marino deal and was also surprised to see Matheson gone.
Obvious now that all of Hughes comments in the media were directed at RH. They were that they weren't going to take on cap space to move Petry and they weren't going to trade draft capital to move him.
At the end of the day I think our D is better and deeper than last season. We probably have the best RD group in the league. Ty Smith is the key to this whole thing. Curious whether one of the other LD get moved now.
It's funny, it has been the complete opposite of what Hextall said. He said he was happy with his D and wanted to bolster the forwards. I'd say the forward group looks weaker at the moment and he completely ripped apart the D. |

Kent Hughes says the Canadiens insisted that Mike Matheson be included in the trade, that Pittsburgh did not want to include him.

The Ruuta signing in itself was avoidable
They consciously swapped Marino for Petry and Matheson was the LHD to go to clear out that logjam.
I don't think they are trading another D either. I think you hope POJ or Smith looks like they can play top 4 and if they do you have your Dumo replacement next year. And the other is likely your 3rd pair.
RD? They just added Petry and Ruuta and resigned Letang so that's it. They could move Ruhwedel, but he's a serviceable RHD making league minimum that you won't get anything for so why.
Friedman is maybe the odd man out. Probably just try to sneak him through waivers. |

The Marino trade I could see coming and we got value out of this even if it wasn’t the type we expected.
The Matheson deal kind of sucks. He was a perfect fit for our team.
I do t know what Kind of cap we have now but I’ll look at it. If I was a betting man I’d say we still have a top 6 forward coming in and one Dman going the other way (Maybe PO Joseph unfortunately). |

Much as people want to see more change up front, I think it's Zucker again to start the year on second line. I think Kapanen and Carter form most of your 3rd line. McGinn and Blueger on 4th line. DOC, Poehling, Archibald to round out the roster?
Just nowhere to pull cap space unless you unexpectedly get someone to take Zucker. Have to hope you have or can find your next ERod or Heinen breakout on the cheap for that last top 9 spot, and that Zucker, Carter, and Kapanen are better than expected. Could have been different but kind of stuck now. I did want to see DOC get his chance. |

Pens have 1.9 in cap now.
M fine w Marino….it’s basically = production at 1/4 costs.
Not sure the point of the petty trade though. Add that w ruuta and there’s not much room for another top 6.
The dude from mtl just seems like another 4 line plug |

Who’s Ruuta? Ruutu’s brother?lol Rutta
Anyway I think they’ll sneak Ruhwedel through waivers. Friedman would probably get claimed due to being younger. |

I am somewhere in the middle on these deals.
I think Petry > Marino
I think you selling high on Matheson is mostly good.
On the flip side, where do Rutta and POJ fit on this defense? Is POJ going to be passed on again? Why do you need a $2.75M bottom pairing guy that really isnt much of an upgrade?
Something still clearly needs to be done trade wise, but i wish they would've packaged Marino and reached for someone rather than the deal they made. Just like with Hornqvist, I think the Penguins took a deal where they could've gotten a better one. |

People are upset about Math being traded. Funny how when he was aquired people were just as upset because he never lived up to his Fla contract, and for the same reason as Petry - what they gave up, not so much what they got in return. Upset about him and Ceci about as much as Rutta now. That's what's great about the internet, it never forgets. Lol
Plain and simple, they moved Math because they needed/desired a top D R shot in Petry, and that's what it was going to take. They weren't going to get a deal like that done with Dumo or Pettersson. They were looking at this for a while obviously, so it's not like a knee-jerk trade, they have a plan and reason that everyone else who obviously isn't an NHL GM, shouldn't be so critical of until it plays out and we see the results.
They also got a bottom 6 capable player who's not neccesariily as useless as people think (not saying he's Dupuis, but remember that nobody throw in?), and still have a surplus of defenseman to move for more bottom 6 support, and the space to make some more decent acquisitions if needed becuase of the Marino trade. |
