If the signings yesterday didn’t make the team better, my question is why even make these signings and use up again what little cap space we had left?
Why not just leave it be, go into season with what we have and bring up some younger talent when lord knows this team will not win many games again this season and the moves made will not make them a contender.
There was no need to use up cap on players we didn’t need. - Buzzo
Because Fletcher had to overpay a goon, and recycle Braun.
Who signed Nate Thompson yesterday? Another guy who will be out of the League, like VDV.

Halleluyah.
Bill, that was one of your best posts ever, and I read them all. You put everything just right.
From the major to the trivial, I'm just curious whether you see that we needed to trade the picks for the right to negotiate with DeAngelo. Could we really not have made a call in the opening minutes of free agency? He's not exactly Timonen. |

I think because they have to gaslight Dave Scott.

I’m not trying to be hypercritical of the team, but there’s no obvious plan here.
Deslauriers is a tough, honest player, but he is a non-entity offensively & a 4 year, $1.75mm investment in a guy like that seems a foolish use of resources, especially when Fletcher notes there’s young players that need a shot.
As I posted yesterday, it’s really not going to help trying to walk some middle ground where the team spends a bunch of draft assets and cap room on players like DeAngelo & Ristolainen and then asks them to assume a role that’s over their capabilities.
I just can’t see getting excited or spending time or money on an organization that runs back a team that was the 4th worst team in the league last season, except that team’s best offensive player has been replaced by Deslauriers & DeAngelo. |

I don't think we've heard yet what the Flyers' official 2022-23 slogan is going to be. Do you think the marketing department would be amenable to something like "Suck Hard For Bedard!"? |

Bill - you are the flyers GM. Do you sign JG for almost 70 mill over 7 years considering the flyers current situation? - Joe Nardone
He has written many times that he would not.

Just poor asset management. They treat draft picks like we are in the Bob Clarke era of the team.

What was the purpose of buying out Lindblom? What are they doing with the cap savings from that transaction?

Hey Bill,
Great clear, lucid and rational post. Much needed in these days of strife.
I think one point that many have missed and Bill hints at, is that the Flyers knew they were stuck going into the offseason. No one was going to take JvR off their hands just to be nice. It was going to cost.
What is more telling to me is not that JvR remains (for now) or that they bought out Lindblom (which still stings), but what they did with that money. Did they lock of any of the RFA's? No. Did they sign a younger, faster, more skilled depth player? No. (accept maybe Morody). They signed a "Fourth Line Fighter" for four years and Justin Braun. I am happy to have Braun back. He is a very capable 6/7 defenseman who can help the younger dmen along. But 4 years for a borderline players?
That is the thing that has me upset. That was Lindblom's money. Braun and DesLauriers. Did that make the Flyers faster, or more competitive? |

Absolutely.
With all the scouts, AGMs, advisors that are there you almost have to try to be this bad at your job.

Yeah, why not spend the draft picks we used on DeAngelo to pry a few prospects away that other teams don't have room in the pipeline for. (I'm not saying their top prospects, but the second tier.) Then stick them in the lineup and see what they can do.
Of all the things that get my goat about CF, it's the "ejecting" dead weight and then just replacing them with more dead weight, sometimes the same player. So we spend a ton of time, energy, and picks to get rid of Erik Gustafsson and Ghost, then a bare cupboard later get DeAngelo?
I didn't watch Burns this past year, but I would have preferred to take Burns for free (ala late career Hatcher or Smith).
By the way, who the hell are Brooks, Marody, Belpedio, and Grosenik? |
