I think he would've gotten 3.75-4.25 in arb, so a couple hundred k extra to buy that extra year, making him more valuable to another team at the deadline (i.e not just a rental).

My only gripe, and its very minor, but the rumour was they were worried about paying too much leading to inflated salaries. I'm curious if that still holds true and if keeping the term down accomplishes that. Cause 4.75....that number probably could've been agreed upon in May.

Ya, that was a dumb rumor. Concern about his long term fit with this team was great, and surprising, to hear.

Have to assume term was the holdup here. He was probably better off going to arb and hitting UFA a year earlier.
