They also didn't have to trade away any picks to make it happen
How did they get to the win now mode?
They drafted and developed
The have one of if not the best goalies in the world, and one of the defensemen in the world
Then there is former #1 overall Stamkos, add in Point, Kuch, Cirelli all players that are studs which they drafted and developed - Stripes77
Cirelli is a stud...?

I completely understand your position but do you think there needs to be more context behind how we finished in the standings? After all it took us more than half the season to ice our full roster. - joshs
I'm sick of qualifying statements and what ifs. This team always operates on them. "well, we were the ninth worst in the league, but over a certain stretch we were 4th best in the east". "Jack Quinn might just be a better top six forward than we can add in FA", "If Ukka can start 55 games then we are set", "Tage Thompson is a 35-40 goal scorer, you know, because he did it once..."
Bad stuff happens. Injuries. Down years. TT might score 27 goals this year and it would still be a decent year. Not everything will go your way. Maybe next year you don't get 20 goals from Okposo and 30+ from Skinner. Maybe Power struggles horribly his real rookie season? Maybe Tuch has a 45 point season instead of almost being a PPG?
For every good what if, there is a bad what if. And every team has a list of them as long as we do. You don't think the elite teams have prospects that might make them better? For every Bruins team that might start slow and be bad, there are the islanders and Red Wings who maybe should make the playoffs.
Bottom line, we were ninth worst, and we need to be top 16. Only way to reliably do that is to legitimately make moves that 'should' make you better and then hope for the best, instead of doing nothing and just hoping anyway.

Is there some magical elixir that is going to allow the team to ice a full roster for most of next year?
The Sabres, and most teams, deal with injuries every season.
You're banking on full health the majority of next season with the current roster to produce a quality end of season record. |

We could have signed Malkin , Letang MAF Copp and all the other top FA and still no guarantee the team makes the poffs or even clicks.
We're building the right way finally.
Just last year we got rid of 3 of our top players. This isnt an overnight fix.

I see they are signing some depth guys, but it's one place where they'll be weaker than last year. Hope they are healthier.

at the end of the day
unless we have a vezina finalist or a norris finalist
we are still a bottom 4 team in the east and a bottom 10 team in the league
donnie will be doing well to get this team to 82 points
hopefully his is not the scape goat 9 months from now and the owners are on board with all of this
the bare minimum was accomplished today and w/o a trade, the roster is pretty much set
I think our pk forwards are weak and not sure who the 4th pk d man will be
probably will have 2 kids ready for a spot up front a year from now, assuming peterka and quinn are fixtures this year, so it's a make or break year for a few guys up front this year
semi rant over |

It’s going to be year 3 of Adams and this team is looking like 6th or 7th in division. It is driving me crazy that they along with the WGR personalities are operating on the notion that in a couple years all their young players will be making max term max dollar contracts. It doesn’t take a hockey genius to realize that as of right now with this roster it’s going to be a long year. |
