Agreed. He’s a good goalie who’s been injured but was still good in a small sample last year. A lower cap would have given some cover so they could bring in someone else in case things turn sour. So this is a big roll of the dice by Dubas. - Canada Cup
will wait and see, but Keumper/Campbell probably get 4 or 5 years each. at 5'ish
Leafs must already know some details on them, who and how much...no tampering of course.
Both of those goalies are decent risks also at that term and cap.

It's win win, he plays better because he's on a far superior team or he goes to Robida island and Leafs get cap space - bobbyisno1
....and have to trade more assets to get a another goalie?

I've always felt Matty 2 Cups was the goalie of the future and faking his injuries in Ottawa to go home was the right move. |

Remember, this whole situation comes about because Campbell couldn’t string 3 months of good goaltending together. Leafs weren’t prepared to pay him to be a number one guy. That leaves them competing with Washington for Kuemper for the only other legit starter on the market. That would have driven the price beyond $5 IMO or left them dry.
They concluded Murray was the best of the rest. He probably has the potential to be but again, a lower price would have made it less risky. |

Higher retention would make this more palatable.

Rolling the dice on Matt Murray.
I wasn't a fan of the idea before so I won't change my tune now.
And he's still signed for another year after this one.

Sadly yes, although I do expect better from bloggers.
On the other hand it is a Habs blogger who is behaving perfectly in line with all the Habs fans I know in real life. I think this website is the only place I have seen any Habs fans that aren't absolute insufferable bumholes all the time. - Aetherial

Toronto Bag Head’s Twitter is quite the show tonight. Don’t take it too seriously Leaf fans, some of it is funny stuff, some stupid and some informative…

Right. So….blame Campbell.

The truth is, Campbell is not a top goalie, but to even think Murray is going to be better then Campbell is absurd. Campbell wasnt the reason the Leafs last to Tampa, there is no doubt about that. |

I don't love it b/c I agree ..i thought he'd have more leverage.
But Marleau was different. Nobody wanted PM at more than minimum salary. There was no trade/retention option. And the buyout was not an option b/c of how Lou arranged the contract. They had to find a team to buy him out for them saving them 6M in cap space.
If Dubas is guilty in this deal ..it's that he believes in their ability to turn MM around. He HAS to be right or he's (frank)ed. - The Law
While this is true, I think that the frustration for me is that for all of the things this management team has done that are arguable in terms of their purpose or value, this one is likely the least defensible. It feels like they have forgotten how much we desperately need cap space. $1.1m in cap space (the addition over Mrazek) is a massive amount to the Leafs for a massive risk in Murray.
I mean, look if Ottawa would do 25%, get them to do 30%. Optically it's no big deal, but it reduces the Cap to $4.34 to the Leafs. Now getting a team to eat $2.5m for two years is realistically very expensive in hindsight. Could you get an Arizona or Chicago to eat $1m for 2 years for a 3rd? Could they have eaten $1.5m or $2m for a 2nd?
To the Leafs, cap is king. Getting Murray down to $2.5m or lower and getting Ottawa to pony up for it was the key to this being successful in my opinion. Getting him at nearly twice that cap hit is unacceptable.
