There's certainly an argument to that. This team would have to be completely decimated from top-to-bottom to fit a Barry Trotz style. The team would be boring, but they'd get to the 2nd round of the playoffs. I think he's one of the best defensive coaches in hockey and in 23 years of coaching, he has 1 cup. I believe he's made it to the conference finals once as well (twice including the cup year).

There are no guarantees. This Leafs team is capable of a lot more and in my opinion they don't need to blow it up and change everything about everything to do so.

You wouldnt need to blow up anything
Just change some of the supporting cast. Trotz would turn this team into a true contender that got results in the playoffs.
Until the team turned on him, but if they won a cup by then, who cares
Also, id take boring hockey that wins in the playoffs any day

Leafs might be the only team not to announce their qualifying decisions. Stuff leaked out about Kase and Engvall, presumably from the players’ side. So no word on a bunch, specifically Sandin. Very weird IMO.

6.125 AAV for Nichushkin. Is that right? Wow, that's a lot.

Nichushkin off the board.

8 years in Colorado.

Not surprised. Kadri, malkin and gaudreau going to free agency are the big names. It would be so rare for nichuskin, forsberg to join them.

Plus Colorado cant let everyone walk

Yeesh, Flames are on the knifes edge. Could swing hard one way or the other.

Gaudreau heads for greener ($$) pastures and Tkachuk has them over the barrel by electing a 1 yr arbitration award - walking him into free agency next summer?

The cap not going up is affecting a lot of teams. If they aren't sure core guys might as well let them walk.

Might even be something people picked up from Dubas with the likes of Kase, Bunting and Kampf.

The offer sheet narrative is fantasy BUT the one name that would make some sense to go full Bergevin on (for any team without a #1 tender). .....Oettinger. He might be a generational type g'tender.

Nope, they would find a 2 year stop gap until one of the prospects was ready.
