So they wouldn’t go 4 years with malkin but are going 6 with Rakell? Interesting choice

Injury concerns probably..4 years is a lot fornhim. He's has a lot of games played. Can't let sentiment go before business. Pens have fared pretty well when he's out of the lineup as well

No, meaning in a trade. Everyone knows how hard I railed against the Shattenkirk signing, guy was a disaster before he even got here. When was the last time a team retained over $5 million in a TRADE for an entire season.
- nyrangers9479

My point was that it really amounts to the same thing- it still costs the Rangers $5m to play for another team for an entire season.

Someone brought it up before, now you really gotta wonder, with Backstrom’s career likely over if the Caps make a run at Malkin. Gotta figure with Ovi and Kuzy there it might be a good selling point.

And my point is no team in the history of the NHL has retained $5+ million for an entire season on a trade.

Wonder if that means Malkin is really gone
- TPC

Word of Malkin becoming a first time free agent was released around 6:00pm ET, after he insisted on receiving a lengthier term deal than just the 3 year term the Pens were offering. It's believed that his past injury history, especially his two ACL surgeries needed, made the Pens fearful of yielding more than a three year deal.

Ironically, a three year deal if Malkin had accepted it, would have run through the exact ending time of Crosby's current contract.

Malkin likely expected to receive that "security" he sought from the Pens, after having played his entire career for them, resulting in his first testing ever of his F.A. market value. But two ACL surgeries alone among his injury history was likely the #1 reason it dictated otherwise.

Just wait until next Summer when as of today, the Avs will have to extend among some eligible F.A.'s then, the likes of J.T. Compher, Erik Johnson, and a player named Nathan MacKinnon.

With Nichuskin just extended today at $6.125M per year for 8 years, how much will MacKinnon believe he will be worth next offseason? It will likely be close or equal to, if not slightly greater than Makar's annual $9M expiring after the 2026/27 season.

Id bet anything Johnson takes an extension like Giordano, hes not getting any younger.

Sure its not taking into consideration what they do the rest of this offseason but they have 35m in cap space, not including what the cap goes up to next year. Thats ALOT of cash.

Man, FLA only has 775k in cap space with only 19 of 23 players signed. In any deal they make they really can’t take back any salary and are losing Marchament bc of it.

First, the salary cap is not expected to rise by more than $1M per season until the players' escrow debts are fully repaid to the owners; which Commissioner Bettman stated in April, "will reasonably be by the end of the 2024/25 season." That would in turn make any new cap increase >$1M not be effective until the 2025/26 season.

D'man Erik Johnson still wears an "A" on his jersey for reason why as long as they feel he can still both successfully perform & help lead, the Avs will attempt to retain him next Summer. But I agree it would be at a much lower cost than his expiring $6M. It would also no longer include a M-NTC & a NMC at his then age of 35.

E.J. tallied 8-G & 17-A in 77 reg. season games played this past season, plus had a career best (+22) rating, which was tied for 5th best overall on the Avs roster. He also averaged 17:00 TOI in both his 77 reg. season games played, & in the postseason when playing in all 20 of the Avs playoff games.

That whole story could have been written in one sentence.

“Yes, hes getting up there in age, he definitely wont be getting big money anymore”.

Are they going to re-sign Kadri? If so, that'll take a bite.
