DeAngelo, I like the skill, he meets the need of high end skill, huge cost. An optimist would say, look at the hit rate of the picks the last 5 years and how can you know you really passed on high end talent with the picks. That said, skill level for kids coming in keeps going up. I heard AD on a hot mic a few times during the playoffs, he is an instigator, on one hand that is good and the Flyers need that, on the other I do think the guy is a little to cocky and I can see why he had some issues. I hope he matures and finds a balance. A 2 year deal, just in time to flip him and try to get the picks back, LOL.

The Flyers need to move JVR quick or whoever quick, being over the cap and trying to move cap is no Bueno. My sense is the Flyers might do something similar to the Canes, move a player with cap for picks and not much Cap coming back

hey, maybe they are shopping Risto

- wcorvette

I am hearing JVR will be traded with the Flyers covering only $2M in his salary, which, if true, would be a big win for the Flyers! That's $5M off the books right there.

(1) Third rounder, (1) 4th rounder (3) second round picks, (1) first rounder, Ghost, Hagg, NoPa and Myers for Ellis, Risto and DeAngelo who carry a combined $16mil in cap hit.

Would they really be a lot worse off if they had just done nothing?

- mickel25

How about they draft a RHD in the 1st or 2nd round?

Nah.

It was just a thought.

I would rather have Ghost and Hagg. Said that from the start.

Ridiculous asset management.

I didn't have an opinion on Hagg but I was clear in wanting to keep Ghost. Always thought he was not used properly

Whatever could you possibly mean? Based on what I’ve read around here today, Ellis isn’t coming back and Fletcher just singlehandedly improved our defense with a great guy! We’re saved!
- SuperSchennBros

As MJL said earlier, guy is a fine upgrade on Yandle.

A replacement for Ellis he is not.

“We’re not expecting Tony to come in and be an elite defender. We wanted to get him so we wouldn’t have to defend as much,” Chuck Fletcher said about DeAngelo.

Now for a reality check, let's see if we can bring you back from planet Delusia. Ellis is DONE! Fletcher does not make this move unless Ellis is not coming back. Therefore Ellis' $6.25M cap hit is put on LTIR, which is where it is right now. Once again Fletcher is left with a gaping hole in his 1st defensive pairing and in need of a RHS defenseman, and NO ONE in the system ready to take on that role. DeAngelo slots into that spot at $5M very nicely, and by doing so saves Fletcher $1.25M in cap space for that slot (simple math, $6.25M - $5M = $1.25M).

I never said I was happy with this move, never not once! I was hoping Fletcher would not trade picks for players, but in this case I am not sure what else he could have done, unless of course you want him to go into next season with a gaping hole in his first defensive pairing? Fletcher's job is on the line, that was made clear by Scott in the mid season presser. Fletcher is going to ice the best team he can for himself, and his new coach Torts. My only hope is that Torts can get DeAngelo to play the way he wants him to, and do so without any internal issues that have plagues DeAngelo in the past. If DeAngelo plays the way he is capable, this could very well turn our great for the Flyers, especially given Ellis' condition. However there is also a lot of risk here.

- jd250

Dangelo is not a 1st pair guy by any means. He is a 3rd pair offensive zone start guy. Braun was a better 1st pair dman than Dangelo. Keep in mind the team Dangelo played with last year was a strong defensive team who could cover his mistakes. At least he is fun to watch.

I have always thought it strange that instead of clearing cap space before acquiring a player, we acquire them and then clear it. I guess the GM loves working from a position of weakness. Those are the deals where we really get fleeced and there is probably one or two coming, you think we overpaid for TD, this/these have the potential to be much worse.

Reading Gauthier's transcript, he does have confidence about him. Not arrogance though.

The problem is, why are we looking for an upgrade for Keith Yandle? We go from Niskanen, to Ellis to what? Why isn’t a reliable partner for Provorov a priority? If you’re willing to drop assets like that as if you have the biggest balls at the poker table, why not move up a spot or two in the draft when we just saw Wright slip? I understand wanting to get better but get better smart. Get better where it makes sense. We’re entering our first season without Giroux? Why not try to replace him, even in the short term for this “retool”?

Your ignorance is astounding. You don't know how LTIR works. So again, I will attempt to educate you. The salary cap has been around for only 17 years.

A player placed on LTIR is not removed from the cap. A player placed on LTIR counts the same against the cap as any other player does. You claimed that the Flyers won't be capped out and gained 1.25M. LOL.

Here is what LTIR is. LTIR is an exemption to spend over the upper limit, here is the key part. IF replacing the player puts a team over the upper limit. By definition, a team using LTIR is over the upper limit and capped out.

Adding on DeAngelo at 5m leaves the Flyers at about 100K below the upper limit with Frost and Tippet still to be signed. They can use the LTIR cap space to sign them and be cap compliant. They will be over the upper limit and into LTIR and capped out!

Sure you did. This is taking a stance against the move or in support of it?

"Fletcher just got a player that had 51 points and a +30 in only 64 games last season and is only 26 years old, and he got him without giving up any 1st round picks. But only on this forum could we make these ridiculous statements that Fletcher is the worst GM of all time."

Agreed, a 4th in this year's weak draft is nothing, and the Flyers had multiple 3rd round picks in next year's draft, so giving up one of them doesn't hurt that much. The 2nd in 2024 was a bit much for a player you could have signed next week, albeit possibly for more money. Still DeAngelo would have been a top 10 scoring defenseman had he played closer to 80 games, while also being a +30 (his partner Slavin was slightly better at +35), that is nothing to sneeze at!
- jd250

Here we are back to the asinine argument of trying to devalue draft picks. Same old same old.

DeAngelo was carried by Slavin. He won't be a +30 on the Flyers.

Is it possible Tony D also complimented Slavin to form a very good pair?

adding, they can go over the cap in the off-season by 10%, they should be able to sign their RFA's and still be able to tell other teams being cap compliant to start the season is not an issue, using the LTIR. I bring that up because they are going to try and move JVR, being over the cap and no LTIR would hurt the trade position
