Patience is the key.
That scenario you speak of would never of happened.
Look a the haul for Hagel which WAS a good trade in terms of return. You mean to tell me Hagel is worth more than Dcat. Its timing and being shrewd. Everybody knew Chicago was itching to deal Dcat as well as itching to get in the 1st round at any cost....so when your enemies know your play they have the advantage...and the the result is ? There you go. Plus they reached on the pick to make matters worse. - CanHawk
Really can't compare the 2 trades. Hagel to TB was made because TB was desperate for exactly the type of player Hagel is for their 3rd consecutive Cup run.
OTT is in a completely different place than TB, and is just approaching a window of relevance.
Also, one trade was made at the deadline, when TB needed the player immediately. There were other options for OTT, and time was not a factor. |

Hagel is signed for 2 more years at $1.5, then is RFA
ADB was RFA next year at $9 mil, eligible for UFA the next year. He would not sign an extension. He obviously has eyes on UFA (or huge contract for 7 or 8 years) to not even consider an extension. So in essence he is a 2 year rental
ADB did get a #7, which is worth way more than a #1 in the high 20's (and is top 10 protected) - LAHawk
This is a great point, people throw around #1s like they are all equal.
Not sure if there is a Jimmy Johnson draft pick point chart, but it would be interesting to see the point total for the #7 and #39 (Cat Trade) vs. say the #30 and #28 (Potential Hagel picks)? |

That might be better than having him play out the whole year and leave for nothing. - LAHawk
No it wouldn’t. I wouldn’t want to allow the satisfaction of another fan base to have him for so little. |

The skating ability is what stands out there. And to your point, going from HS to an actual minor league is probably a bit of a jump.
I'm assuming he plays 2 years of college so there's a bit of a project here but having a really good athletic base is encouraging. Hopefully he can put the rest of the game together. - fattybeef
He's committed to the University of Minnesota Minneapolis. Great program. They made it to the NCAA final 4 this year. |

If Keith retiring is true, I give him big time kudos for punching above his weight to 3 Stanley Cups and 2 Norris Trophies. Simply put, he had an awesome NHL career. |

OK…
Let’s say you wait and try to trade DCat at the next TDL. What teams are in the mix for his services? Typically, teams that are making a playoff push/legitimate Cup contention. Where is their #1 pick going to fall? Not in the top 10. Also, do those teams have the cap space to absorb DCat?
Then, let’s say you wait and try to trade DCat during the next off season - given his contract status at that point - does the market improve or become more diminished in terms of potential return? |

So you approve of the trade?
We got good value? |

I'm looking forward to Toews and Kane not waiving their NMC. Play out their contract then sign wherever they want next year 👍👍
KD can throw that in his 5 year plan - PatShart
Throw what? That he doesn't have to contend with two $10.5M contracts on his rebuilding roster anymore?
Unless he has a big bounce back year, is anyone going to give up much for 19 (even with money retained)?
Kane, I get it, but they are not going to be competitive for the next few years. Sure, it would be great to get assets for him, but just having the contract off the books is a huge benefit.
Besides, do you think that Kane/Toews would burn another year - toward the end of their careers - on a for sure crap team just to stick it to KD because he did what he said he would do? |

It's called perspective. You don't have to be happy (or approve of - whatever that means) with the trade to understand the circumstances around it. Everyone and their mother wanted/expected more in a trade for ADB. Do you think KD turned down a better offer? |

Yep, but as a late 3rd rd pick I see the appeal. Even though Thompson is 20 yr old he showed the compete and IQ besides the skill putting up points as he should as a 20 yr old in Jrs.
Guessing they see him as a late bloomer with reasonable expectation of growth. - Mr Ricochet
Late bloomer during covid era, nothing wrong with that

If the pick becomes a stud dman then it was a good trade |

What is this deal for a nobody (Liam Gorman) about? And why are we giving up a pick for a 22 year-old who appears to have done nothing at the college level? |

I could see the Penguins calling KD and telling him they don't intend to re-sign Malkin and asking him if he would be willing to pay half of Kane or Toews contracts for next season. Pens are still in win mode, probably attractive to a guy like Kane especially. |

I doubt he got a better offer.
I just think he painted himself in a corner a bit and limited the return. IMO. Timing is everything. |

Don't mind Seth Jones at all, but that trade, and what Stan gave up, and more importantly at that point in time of the "rebuild" will go down as one of the worst organizational ideas since the Phil Esposito trade. - vabeachbear
Well said, I really agree with how you phrased it. Really frustrating move especially at the time, at least to me. |

That is a very plausible scenario - especially in that you could see the incentive for either player to waive their NTC under that circumstance. |
