Alex DeBrincat availability - July 8, 2022

https://www.youtube.com/w...ab_channel=OttawaSenators

Shane Pinto got a hold of him to welcome him to the team and offer up #12.

- HoweHatrick

Classy move by Pinto to welcome DeBrincat like that, including making the jersey number available. It will be interesting to see if the value of the team culture pays off, in terms of the leadership from other prominent American players like Tkachuk, Norris, Pinto, Sanderson, etc. Hard to say if DeBrincat will be as excited about playing in a smaller market like Ottawa long-term after being in Chicago for 5 years, but some team bonding and early chemistry could make a big difference in that equation.

Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
DeBrincat - Stützle - Giroux*

*Heavily dependent on a short term / fair dollar contract.

Is 3 years @6-7m fair?

I really feel bad for Pinto. A LOT of people would be talking about this guy this season if he was healthy. I hope he has an amazing year.

Man the American players the Sens have - does anyone have it in the NHL?

I still don't see how any Murray trade would go down. Both in cost, and whcih team would want to take him on.
- david22

Goalie market thinned quick, Leafs might be in a bind. If we can trade Murray with half retained and no sweeteners, that'd be a coup.

Since when has this team been drafting "big LD after big LD"? They may have Chabot/Sanderson in place at LHD in the NHL, but the prospect system was actually quite weak in LHD. Outside of Brannstrom & Kleven, there's almost nobody worth talking about vs. RHD where they have Thomson, Bernard-Docker, and Rogers lined up, along with Guenette. Plus, Nordberg and Hamara are hardly a pair of bruising D-men... but they do have very NHL-projectable styles and two-way upside. The Senators were also far from the only team to pass on Ty Nelson for ~20 picks after his consensus range, so there were obviously some deficiencies identified.

Not to mention that anyone drafted outside of the 1st round of the 2022 draft will have 2 years in junior/Europe, then maybe another 1-2 years in the AHL before we're even talking about having an NHL impact as a 21/22yo call-up (i.e. nobody drafted today was ever going to be helping them in the immediate term). The 6 years they have Chabot signed for may seem like a long time, but take 4 years off of that before any of these guys are even sniffing at regular NHL ice time, and you get a sense of why you can't just stop developing players at any position. Factor in the potential for injuries, and it's even more reason not to just develop prospect systems based on short-term needs.

In the 67s' last game against the Bulldogs, Tyler Boucher was having a real hate on for Nelson on the ice for some reason, super aggressive.

Didn't seem overjoyed which is understandable. Looked pretty bummed as a matter of fact. Almost like he was about to cry.

Interesting that he thinks Stutzle is not afraid to mix it up in the corners and will be making plays out of the corners, presumably to him. Wonder what Stutzle will make of that?

Can't play DEbrincat with Tkachuk and Norris because Batherson is the playmaker on that line and DeBrincat is not a go mix it up in the corners kind of guy so tag, Stutzle, you're it. You might want to grow a couple of inches and add 20 or 30 pounds this summer and you might want to temper any contract aspirations you may have entertained.

Also will be interesting to see who gets booted off the first PP unit. Tkachuk will want to stay there along with his buddy, Norris, so that leaves either Batherson or Stutzle. I'm guessing it will be Stutzle. Numbers go down so less money offered and surprise, surprise, surprise, you are no longer the shining bright light of the future. You may need to be moved in a package to find someone who can play with DeBrincat. Just kidding. DeBrincat won't be staying but after the treatment you're about to receive I don't think you'll want to stay either.

Otherwise seems like a good draft. Big and mobile is the ticket.

You seem so sad. On the other hand, it was a highly creative effort on your part. It is hard to conjure up such a dark hypothesis where the addition of a 41 goal scorer on Stutzle's wing causes his career to slide backwards.

Watch and learn. Actually you will be leading the charge for shipping Stutzle out to find a center to play with DeBrincat.

The actual remaining salary payable to Patrick Kane is $2.9m. His cap hit is $10.5m.

Kane would be a very good fit for the Sens.

Well my first choice was Matthew Tkachuk. My second was Pierre Luc Dubois and third was Evander Kane. However, I am very pleased with what Dorion has done to improve the team.

Seems to me that you are disappointed that you were not disappointed.

However, you do pose a challenging thought around the idea that DeBrincat is so good that it will cause us to want to move Stutzle. I suppose you also believe it will only further add to Stutzle's accelerated decline if Dorion is able to add Giroux to play along side them.

theres 2 major concerns with Cat: 1. can OTT resign him, they gave a alot for him and would hurt the team if he left in 2 year

2. his size is not conductive to smith style of play and can he handle playoff hockey.

I did not sat DeBrincat is so good it will cause you to move Stutzle. I said you, Spatso, will want to defend your love of this move so much that you will sacrifice the better player which is Stutzle just so you don't look bad. Same as Dorion will do. You are both of you a disaster.

I don't think you wanted to list "can he handle playoff hockey" as a concern. Making the playoffs will be a significant step forward.

I think the Smith style is a legitimate question. Perhaps it is the reason that I favoured Matthew, Pierre Luc or Evander. I would not hesitate to flip Debrincat even up for either Matthew or Pierre Luc.

In regard to resigning him Sens have significant control. They can open negotiations with him this Wednesday and conclude a new deal at anytime. At the end of this season, the Sens would have the option of trading him if he decides against a long term deal with the Sens.

id take Mathew over Cat too, but Mathew will ask for 2-3M more per year than cat would but if both offer 9M to Dorion, id take Mathew 10 out of 10 times

Whoa! This is not my favourite move by any means. But, it is a good move.

I would have preferred more size and jam.

Yes, I believe Stutzle is the better player and I hope that a Debrincat/Stutzle combination works. It should. Stutzle is a playmaker always looking for the pass. Debrincat is a finisher, a very good goal scorer. On paper, it is a good match.

I can see DeBrincat scoring some goals in the fall especially playing on the first PP unit. I think of the 161 goals he scored in his 5 seasons with Chicago 54 of those were PP goals. As play becomes more physical in the latter part of the season this guy will struggle a bit and if they make it into the playoffs he will disappear.

This team was going to improve over last year just because they won't be playing a bunch of games at half strength because of Covid and they probably won't have so many injuries. If the net situation is more stable and Sanderson proves to be a quick study on D that will also help.

This DeBrincat move was made so Dorion can claim the improvement was due to his hockey acumen. He doesn't care what happens two years from now. Not to mention that Norris who scored 35 goals in 66 games now knows DeBrincat is going to be getting 9 million for his 41 goals in 82 games. What a disaster of a trade!

I have not said this before but I have wondered if things are not settled in Calgary if Matthew still remains an option for the Sens.

Dorion has been given a budge of $75m which is essentially authorization to spend to the cap (saving cap space for Stutzle next summer). It would be very tight but the Sens could do a deal for Matthew if they flipped DeBrincat the other way. Still have room for Giroux and Chychrun.

Perhaps that is just too crazy.

My only concern is getting Debrinicat to sign long term. Of course, that's a problem for down ther oad, and him being an RFA is a key difference to previous moves.

For that to happen, the Sens would most likely need to portray themselves as a playoff team. Are they good enough right now to make the playoffs? They'd need to bump one of the current eight teams to get in.
