When you sign an RFA to a big offersheet, do the 1st round picks a team has to pay come in consecutive years or if a team has multiple firsts in one year, can they give those?

Im just wondering diff scenarios on what they could do.

- Leniwm1

The picks a team gives up has to be all of the original picks owned by the team regardless of draft position. So if a team had their own 1st at 15OA and another team's at 3OA they would have to give up the 15th. You also cannot offer sheet players if you don't have your own picks for the years they would be required to be given up in, so you saw a couple of seasons ago the Canucks (I think) reacquire some really late round pick because if they wanted to offer sheet they would've needed it to follow the rules.

Oh wow, no idea it was that locked down. Why does that even matter? Seems like one of those NHL rules that make no sense. If they got rid of that rule, Id image more trades would happen, which fans always love.

oddly these rules have been in place for a super long time and the reason we got Scott Stevens. The Blues sent an offer sheet to the Caps for Stevens which sent 5 (!!!) first round draft picks back. Then the Blues offersheeted Shanahan from us but didn't have the correct picks available so they tried to make a deal to send other players back. Lou refused their deal and would only take Stevens from them which an arbitrator ruled in our favor.

If all that is true, and I am a firm believer Lou got the mafia involved to make sure he got what he wanted.... j/k.

How did management of St.Louis not know the rules? Thats weird to me, I would think all this was thought of before any transaction would happen.

So I love the rule because we got #4. Now they should get rid of it.

Who will the Devils draft? Most likely either Wright or Slafkovsky, unless they trade down. Cant wait for all of the noise to be just that, noise. Canadian media is the worst.

I have this bad feeling Montreal picks Wright, we take Slafkovsky.

We watch Cooley turn into a solid 2C, Nemec and Jiricek become mid pair defenders, Gauthier turn into a perennial 30 goal scorer, Savoie become a guy teams regret letting slip, later first rounders Mateychuck and Pickering become legit NHL defenders, and Slaf winds up a big body 3rd line 35 point a year winger.

I kinda wish we would trade this pick.

Both Friedman and Andy Strickland poured water on the Tkachuk rumors, saying he wont be moved today.

Emily Kaplan from ESPN says: "One of the teams I expect to be active today is the New Jersey Devils. I’ve been told they have a lot of wheels in motion, including potentially acquiring a goalie.

I also believe there is a good chance the Chicago Blackhawks trade Alex DeBrincat today."

You have to figure Tatar and Johansson are absolutely on the trade block.

Well in the last 15 or so minutes there's been a huge swing in the betting lines and Slafkovsky is now the favorite to go 1st overall. Still won't believe it until it happens but I'm afraid of what Fitz will do if Slaf is taken.

Is it so bad to draft Wright? It'll be like two Nicos. Nothing wrong with that. Out of the 4C we'd have, put the ones with the worst FO % on the wing - Either Hughes, Mercer or Wright.

I really hope this happens. That probably ups the value of 2OA in a trade, or we get the safe pick with Wright.

Oh no it wouldnt be bad at all! I think Wright is the best/safest player in the draft and i think we should be sprinting to the podium before Montreal even has a chance to get off the stage if they pick Slaf lol. Theres just been a ton of smoke that if Slafkovsky isnt on the board that Fitz could turn to picking a D at 2 or just trading down to pick one of those D or a Gauthier/Kasper.

Which D would be a good choice to trade down, say 2 spots, get another pick and the Dman?

Also, where can I watch the draft at work? Is it gonna be live on NHL.com ? It just looks like they have the board up, but no video section.

If we trade down then we're looking at Nemec and Jiricek, and i think thats perfectly fine if we're getting another asset. Would just suck to actually have a chance to draft Wright and pass on him lol.

The draft is on ESPN! Not sure if its on espn+ or anything though unfortunately, sorry!

I think ESPN has a monopoly on the draft in the US market, and they want you to sign up for ESPN+ to stream it.

I would think Nemec would be the first D off the board tonight.

A lot of people on twitter hinting at Jiricek going #2 if Slaf goes to the Habs..

I hope they would at least explore what the Coyotes or Kraken would offer for the chance to jump up to #2 and get Wright if the Devils really have Slafkovsky #1, Jiricek #2 on their draft board.

Coyotes have a huge amount of picks so if there is a pick swap it makes sense to do it with them.

I've turned around on Slaf being a good player, but he's not going to be Lindros/Jagr.
