So Hagel gets you 2 players and 2 firsts, Cat gets you no players one 1st and a 2nd not even in next years draft. Jerry Krause slide over
I imagine the Cat family is very very very unhappy today, and it'll be fun to see Ottawa flip him for more next year. - BetweenTheDots
Krause ripped apart a championship team, KD inherited a team that hasn't make the playoffs in 5 years. A bit different scenario eh?

Crap, that was an underwhelming and disappointing trade.
I'll have a new blog in tomorrow morning with thoughts on the DeBrincat trade and a recap of the 1st round now that the Hawks have the 7th overall and who knows maybe another pick if more trades go down today. - Theo Fox
Keep in mind there's no mention of an extension being done first? |

Yep, maybe more trades tonight. - boilermaker100
Trading Hagel and Cat = full, down to the studs, rebuild. Anything they can get value for is now on the table, imo. |

"We thank Alex for his tireless dedication to the Blackhawks organization over the last five seasons and wish him the best in Ottawa," GM Kyle Davidson said in a statement. "It was an incredibly difficult decision to trade a player of Alex’s caliber. We feel as if this move sets the Blackhawks up for future success by giving us additional flexibility and future talent. Securing this early of a first-round pick for tonight and an additional second-round selection tomorrow allows us to fortify our prospect base with high-end players who we expect to be a difference makers in the coming years.
"Although we didn’t have a first pick in the draft until today, our scouting staff has been anticipating this scenario. I have been clear in my desire to move into the first round, and we are excited to move up and make a pick this evening.
My guess the flexibility part is we do not want to pay D Cat more than $9 mil. per because we are still going to suck. - LAHawk
My guess is KD is full of poop and trying to spin an awful trade. |

I'm sure Kane is saying some choice words right now - BetweenTheDots
Let him. He's in full control of where he plays. I'm sure KD would be happy to trade him for more assets. Considering his comments on the trade regarding flexibility, it wouldn't surprise me if KD takes on a bad contract or two for assets. |

Yeah, more 2nd rounds pick is what they need. |

Just what they need. A guy who can't skate. But hey he is big and stuff. |

For all his bluster, KD threw the did cat's name out there and then could not take it back. He forced the deal and didn't get one new weapon for 2023, which is a disappointment.
And the fact that only ONE of the franking picks is BEFORE our #38 is horse plop too.
It only happened because the trade of the 7th overall to Buffalo for # 27 for sabres to take goalie Murray was nixed by Murray no trade clause.
If Murray had waved his clause this pick would have been Buffalo's
I CAN tell you why it happened...at that slot they do get an NHLer. After slot #11 the talent is less iffy that you pluck a long careered impact player.
They decided they needed to get in early in the dance and despite losing DeBrincsat, they get a really really good player here.
Unless the two Russians are there at #38 & #39 the new scouting staff will be hard pressed at the guaranteed impact player except at #7.
I would say Cutter Gauthier but everything depends on some teams taking the Czech and Slovak defenders -if the drop, you are looking at Matthew Savoie a terrific small attacker, or big Marco Kasper.
Hopefully Jonathan Lekkerimäki or Cutter Gauthier are there.... |

I did. He wasn't good last year. Not to anyone who actually watched him play. He is terrible defensively. But apparently it was the coach's fault he couldn't defend at the blue lines. Or fell on his ass at least once a shift. |

Interesting…no discussion on extension between Ottawa and Debrincat prior to the trade. After next season Debrincat is 1 year away from UFA status. Safe to assume this will impact term and $ on an extension moving forward. |

Neither Nemec, nor Jiříček will be there at #7. - stonefire
I truly hope they aren't b/c the forward class is much more appealing.
My worry is they are both there are #7 and the scorers are gone.

He's also delusional enough to think that the rebuild timeline is only 4 or 5 years when in reality its at least 7 but more realistically 8-10 since they're starting from scratch. |
