Only logical reason for this ridiculous trade is two fold
1-Force Kane/Toews to waiver their clauses to be traded. Do they really want to play with a glorified beer league team next year?
2-Guarantee to have the worst record in the NHL next year, giving them the best chance at that very coveted 1-1
There is no other explanation I can find, because the return sucks for a 25 year old 40 goal scorer - kwolf68
Yep, there just had to be better offers out there.
Kane and Toews (Jones, too) have known the plan for a long time now. I suspect they've made their desires known to KD.
I know KD has now suddenly entered "moron" status, but maybe it would be fair to give him one offseason to judge him.... |

Yeah if I remember 2 seasons ago ADB was a bust when he only scored 18.

THEY wouldve been better trading him at the tdl when someone is desperate and possibly got a pick and there best or 2nd best prospect instead of trading him to have a first this year
Maybe the end game is to get 19/88 and possibly Seth to okay being traded even though his contract nmc isn’t started yet.
They could also be anticipating Keith retirement |

A guy who has done nothing but fill the net his whole life. How many of these guys about to be drafted even have one 40 goal season at any level on their resume?
At most, one. - Elbows15
The top 10 NHL goal scorers in the past 4 years combined are:
Auston Matthews
Leon Draisaitl
Alex Ovechkin
Connor McDavid
David Pastrnak
Kyle Connor
Steven Stamkos
Alex DeBrincat
Sebastian Aho
Nathan MacKinnon
And people are thinking teams might balk at paying the guy a $9 million qualifying offer? absurd.

I am judging this ONE single move. I know there are people (you maybe) who seem to only be interested in deflecting any criticism of the organization or the GM (past or present) as they consider it some sort of personal attack.
At what point can people be critical of a move without you and your cohorts lecturing us about how we should react to a move we see that we think blows chunks?
If Davidson makes a good move I'll say it and give credit. I did with the Hagel trade. |

Where Cat was taken has ZERO ZERO ZERO relevancy to this situation. Period. Not sure why it's even an argument.

So what. They have plenty of space the next two seasons for it to not even be an issue. |

Let us hope. No one wants his contract unless the Hawks eat part of it. - Elbows15
Apparently the Jones madre tweeted out "poopshow" shortly before the trade, so I'm guessing either
1. DBC had been given word and had texted the group chat, or
2. Davidson was asking about Jones waiving his NMC |

If they flip Dach as well (or any other starter of significance) before the draft starts I'll be pretty happy just from an entertainment standpoint.
Can't say it isn't entertaining now. |

I can't see Kane remaining in Chicago tbh. Toews as well. I can't imagine they want to play for a team that may be historically bad. |

I know. I was making the point that for every pick 39 that works out, there are ten who never sniff the NHL. |

This is effectively the same return they would get if DeBrincat signed an offer sheet next year and they refused to match (2 1st, 1 2nd, 1 3rd). Ottawa can get that next year.
2 fiirsts = 1 top-10 first
2nd
3rd
There was no premium from Ottawa for 'a year of the Cat".
Could have kept him and made the decision next year. Guess they are trying to move up the rebuild or something. |

Yup. Pavel Datsyuk was a 6th round pick. Had Detroit traded him in his prime rest assured he would/should have fetched multiple top picks/prospects and his original draft status would have not ever been considered.
I'd have been happier with this trade had the Hawks gotten a legit pro prospect in the Sens far system instead of a hopes and dreams draft pick prospect.
7th overall in an less than great draft, a very good rising prospect in the system and a 2nd may have been palatable.
Just an incredible trade. |

Well, the specifics are they got one asset for him. The 3rd is a nothing and 2 years out. The 2nd has a 25% chance of playing in the NHL.
So they got a top 8 pick is a poopty draft for one of the best goal scorers in the league.
There is no way to spin this into a positive. - Elbows15
Not trying to spin it to a positive. Just laying out what I think. Which is worth about what you paid for it. |

Think that might be the plan. And yes Dcat has potted 40 twice (really 3 bc he had a shortended season and hit 30 in 50 some games).
But he is still 65-70% ozone starts and usually with Kane. I wouldn't call him a 2-way player. He has improved his 2-way play though. Is he a consistent 40g guy without Kane? Idk. Have to account for that in any trade too.
