Smokescreen - Buff36
It's not much of a smokescreen to deliberately avoid gathering more information on a player you plan on investing time and $ in. That's just bad drafting. |

If minty is there at 16 I wouldn’t mind it. Never seen him there still in a mock. Everything I read on him has been great |

Depends, maybe the Sabres have a former player or Coach working for his team. |

But why is second hand information better than just interviewing him themselves? |

2nd and a 3rd, that's why they'll extend him instead of dealing him. |

Sabres have 2 former HC of the USNDP working for them, pretty sure they can get any information they needed |

Different sport, but I’m a Broncos fan and they purposefully didn’t interview Pat Surtain or go to his pro day so they didn’t tip their hand that they wanted him.
The Sabres have ties to that program, they also follow these guys during the year, I’m not sure what one 10 minute interview may tell them what they don’t already know or what they wouldn’t have seen in live viewings or on film.

Wouldn't this also tip their hand though? Like other teams would be aware of it? Im not trying to dog you or anything like that, I just don't think it's much of a smokescreen.
Nhl drafting history through various models, both advanced and regular, show us that after like pick 20, we're all just making wild guesses and hoping player development works. That's why I don't think it as much of a smokescreen, nobody is really altering their draft behaviour around that and it just wastes an opportunity to get to know him even better. |

NFL is a way different beast but to your sabres point, does not interviewing him actually do anything? I buy the argument at the top of the draft, but down towards pick 28? |

Only people who know what they want to do are in the war room.
All we can do is speculate. I guess we’ll find out |

Appert and Granato are well connected to USA hockey, so my guess is that the current coaches would have a relationship with the 2 of them
at least I would hope |
