Who cares, harder for goalies to jump into a new system late in season.
Small sample size, MAF is a good goalie and played well on a poop Chicago team all season. - Santo_44
I must've been watching a different MAF with Chicago and my fantasy team. |

It is when you look at goalies individually yes.
Comparing MAF to how he has declined to other goalies can be quite silly.
You have Holtby who dropped off at 30 and then you have MAF who won a vezina at 36. Pretty obvious to me it can vary vastly and to simply say "I don't want him because he is 38" is quite silly. - Santo_44
Full disclosure, I don't care enough to go full Santo with you today. I don't. π€·π»ββοΈ |

He wouldnt have been my first pick either, but with that said, I really dont know much about who's who of goalie coaches.
Goalies tend to come and go (specially in Leafs land), I would think you get a coach who can work with various styles, no?
It is a little unsettling for a team with Cup aspirations that they dont know who their starter will be and they get a rookie goalie coach.
But we will see. - Fakepartofme
For sure, but we have heard stories (or I have at least) of a goaile who suddenlty becomes much better when they move teams praising their new goalie coach and a differnt way of doing x, y or z.
Granted a big chunk of that could be the 'new voice, new perspective, shiny new toy' type of thing. I'm sure much like at times coaches outstay they welcome with a team and they get tuned out by players or they 'lose the room' the same can happen with goalie coaches.
I hope he does well and my concern was for nothing, when he coaches whomever the Leafs have as goalie(s) next season.

Why you picked a goalie who was playing on a bottom 5 NHL team is beyond me. |

Donβt get me started on the assistant equipment manager - Canada Cup
Tampa is going to fire theirs after the whole "no stick for Kuch when Kuch wants a stick" fiasco.

I sometimes wonder why some of these guys with NHL "experience" keep get hired.

Thank you for elaborating, my point was based around the idea that the age thing does matter as there's proven to be a drop off over the course of history. But we've determined that the age thing is stupid because one person said so so I'll digress. π€¦π»ββοΈ - joel878
I think there could be an exception to the rule, MAF looked good in Chicago (at least to me) before he was traded and if he had a full season with the Leafs who knows but I agree it's definately a gamble based on what history has shown with older goalies.
It would be nice to break the Stanley Cup drought AND have one of the oldest goalies to win a cup at the same time!
Now I fear I've gone and asked the hockey gods for too much.

Fleury was good last year. on a bottom feeder terrible team.
I don't care that he is 37. He is 37 and is a good goalie.
Won the vezina at 35. 36 if we want to use what age you think he is - Santo_44
The best part, for the Leafs, would be that he's a 1 yr commitment.
I've got ~ 8 goalies that are "locks" in terms of consistent #1's going forward and none of them are available.
Shesterkin, Sorokin, Oettinger, Demko, Vasi, Saros, Markstrom and Hellybuck.
Outside of that its going to be some degree of gamble and I'd much prefer a 1 or 2 yr gamble then a 4 or 5 year gamble. |

10 team league, 3 goalies per team, and total points focused league to win your week matchup.
Look in the seasons predictions thread, I picked Chicago to be the surprise/playoff team because I thought MAF would play good for them. I was really (frank)ing wrong. He was a big reason they were bottom barrel. |

Yup exactly.
Might be nice to have nobody locked up for when Brodie and Muzzin are off the books. |

Sign MAF, move Mrazek out, trade for young upside tender to pair with MAF. I like it.
*If Washington is moving one of their young guys to go after a vet #1 we should be listening. Does Sandin get Samsonov? |

Yep. I think he offers the highest ceiling for the Leafs in terms of cap/talent ratio.
Unless Helleybyuck becomes available magically. |

That's nice. I actually watched them a lot.
MAF is incredible at letting a weak nothing shot from 50 feet out squeeze through him and into the net, completely demoralising his team. |

Fleury/Comrie? Could do worse, how close Fleury wants to get to the Gio contract could maybe persuade me.
I'm in on the Samsonov angle, he hasn't even scratched his ceiling. I do Sandin for him straight up. |

Would need to hope he can regain his play. |

Yeah I most certainly do not base my opinion on one set of eyes that watch often.
There are professional scouts that get paid to evaluate players that I disagree with.
There are plenty in here that disagree with Dubas who also watches a lot.
The whole "I watch a player a lot" doesn't help convince me otherwise. |

Comrie probably likes that idea.
Sign behind a starter that's on the tail end of his career on a team that is good is probably a smart choice for him. |

Speaking of goalies the Pens just re-signed Casey DeSmith to a 2 year deal with an AAV of 1.8M per year.

Friedman said TOR, COL and PIT seem to be going to be the most interested.
PITT out now...and if COL signed MAF then I wouldn't mind going after Kuemper. |

He's ok for a backup. Wonder what Husso gets, 27 yr old UFA that started 40 games, he had better numbers than Campbell and St. Louis has Binnington at $6M for 5 more seasons. I would expect the Leafs to be kicking the tires, especially after Mrazek is dumped.
