He would be a cheap option for the Oilers who lost their 2 goalies or so it seems. They could then spent elsewhere. - deadpoulet
The thing with Allen is that he could never be a true 50-60 game starter. Why the Blues were always trading for goalies. If the Oilers trade for him then they are looking at getting another 1B goalie. |

yes but it's rather unlikely that Price returns, and Primeau needs more time in the AHL. plus, Allen is a very good backup but he doesn't have the value of a #1, it's not like the return would be that amazing. like I said, I don't get it, oh well lol - Pat1993
It's called assest management. You get something out of an asset instead of losing it for nothing. They can still sign Montembaum on the cheap and get a vet on the UFA market. It's not like it would be the end of the world or something. |

Even if Price returns, does anyone really believe he can play more than 25 games?

When healthy, I think he's better than Smith. And he's cheap, so they could get somebody else to split games with him.
Habs could use Barrie if they move Petry (maybe). |

Oh, I don't think Price will return. But Habs could replace Allen, is what I'm saying. They will have to in a year or so anyway. |

The worst thing Hughes could announce at 2 is that he will leave the #1 choice to hb posters after they reach a conscensus. - Réal_Ruelle
Worst??
Bergeron would still have a job had he done that..

He is better than Smith, and so are you. It doesn't change the fact that if you get Allen you need to get another 40 game goalie. The Oilers are fed up of have 2 40 game guys. |

yup, which is precisely why I would keep him. he isn't a true #1 goalie but he's among the top backups, which is perfect for the habs right now if you anticipate finishing low in the standings, while not being completely humiliated all year long. no point in acquiring a vet elsewhere, you already have him. let bygones be bygones I guess. |

Smith is done, per reports.
He is going on LTIR for the last season of his contract.

I think it's pretty clear that they will start the season with Allen and Montembeault sharing the net 50/50 with Price on LITR.
at the tdl Allen is gone, replace him to finish the season by another vet they'll get for cheap or call up Primeau if he's ready. |

I am not ready to throw in the towel on Allen.
Allen, if he had been healthy all season, would have been the team MVP - he stats really do not reflect on how well he played in front of that poopshow of a team in front of him.
I think there is a confidence in having Allen in net, rather than Monty or some other players.... less pressure on kids being scared of making mistakes because there is a feeling Allen can bail them out more often than not. Let the kids play, get confidence, learn from mistakes (rather than play too conservative and not grow).
That is how I see it, anyways.

Realistically, what is the best case scenario return for Allen?
Maybe, if someone is desperate, a 3rd round pick.
Maybe.

Yeah, I guess it's more a TDL move. But the Oilers need 2 goalies to start the season. |

thing is the habs will also be looking at clearing cap space more than taking another contract in return

Sure, but if they do move Petry, they will need to replace him. That will cost money. |

Jack Campbell is not the answer to anyone's question about goaltending, unless the question is what goalie should we not sign? |

And he will cost a lot more than Allen, wich is why I said the Oilers may have interest there. He's cheap and they can spend elsewhere. |
