Make an offer for McDonagh.
Yeah, he's lost a step.
He has four years left at $6.75 million per year.
Upside : still has gas in the tank, warrior of a d-man, leader, minute-muncher.
Downside : contract, on wrong end of aging curve.
I don't like that Tampa is shopping him. Those are hard minutes to replace. But I get why they are trying to move his contract. - GalacticStone

I believe that’s accurate, never mind the fact McGoonah would end up spending 20+ minutes a night in the box if he was a Leaf come playoff time!
He got away with A LOT this playoff, when he loses a step or 2 he will just resort to more of that. This will eventually cause him to lose his diplomatic immunity with the zebras and becoming a Leaf would only expedite that transition.
Pass for me. |

Don’t care about the refs but the cap hit for an aging D man when it’s time to renew Matthews doesn’t make a lot of sense |

Not exactly, both 33, McDonagh did win 2 cups, but is owed $6.75M for four more seasons. Muzzin, not as accomplished is at $5.625 for 2 seasons. Similar that both have lost a step but McDonagh will be making $6.75M at age 37. Yzerman will help out I'm sure. He'll take that stinky deal, with a prospect and a 1st. On top of everything else, Muzzin is only owed $8M in cash remaining, of which $2M is off the books in July when he gets his bonus. McDonagh has no bonuses on his deal and still has $25M owed to him so he's tough to trade. Muzzin if he waves his NTC is easy to move.

Mcdonagh traded to Nashville. Turns out it wasn't too hard. Looks like Tampa got sweet (frank) all in return though. |

TB likely buys him out to get 600K in savings next year.
Very possible he comes here as a FA. |

Yes good move for Tampa. Nashville can afford it, they have $18M to fill 5 roster spots. Top six forwards a little thin on talent IMO.

They have plenty of room to sign Palat and Gaudreau and another top six forward or a top 4 defender. Vasi and Kuch to LTIR with acute ass fungus and NYR doctor clears them for game one of the playoffs.

Tampa knows how to manage their cap. - fifty__missions
That's kind of dependent on if they can replace what Mcdonagh has brought them during 3 cup runs, because a guy who spent most of last year in the minors doesn't do that.
Anyone can trade a big part of their team for not much because of a cap crunch. If the leafs made a move like this you'd be the first on here talking about how we lost a good player and the team got worse cause Dubas can't manage the cap. Tampa creates a big hole out of necessity and its because they know how to manage the cap? 🤔 |
