The really crazy thing is that this should make Dorion's penchant for wasting $$$ on players like Murray, Dadonov, Zaitsev, Gudbranson, White, Hamonic, etc. all the more unacceptable. They now have a full $3M in buyouts on the books for this year, plus we can only hold our breath in anticipation of the damage yet to come from trying to move on from Murray & Zaitsev. None of that has anything to do with weaponizing their cap space, of course... they're all self-inflected wounds, and in many cases have even interfered with the development of the young players who were supposed to be the emphasis of the rebuild.
Honestly... can they just draft a half-decent player at #7, ideally one who's actually regarded as a consensus top-15/20 prospect this time around? Or at least a RW with top-6 upside so that they're addressing a major gap in the prospect system? This really doesn't have to be so difficult. - khawk
Agreed, draft a player without reaching please!

Then Sakic turns a pair of 3rd round picks into Georgiev, just for good measure... while Dorion burns through two 3rd round picks just to move up in the 2nd round to draft Sogaard and Kleven.

What a tire fire of a trade would have been to Buffalo . Have to thank Murray for nixing the deal as losing a 7th and drop to 16th and still eat salary on Murray is a nightmare of a trade and just the notion of it almost happening should be an immediate release from the NHL . |

The persistent behavior on the part of the organization that suggests a belief that they're done adding high-quality talent to roster is starting to really concern me. Honestly, look at the early-round draft record beyond Stutzle/Sanderson over the past couple of drafts, and you've got Greig, Kleven, Boucher, Ostapchuk, and Rogers accounting for 5/7 picks. Even in terms of raw potential, you're talking maybe 1 player with legitimate middle-six upside, to go along with a group of bottom-6 forwards & 3rd pairing d-men. That's what they have to show from 2 first round picks, and 3 second round picks... factor in a "McGroarty" pick this year, and it would effectively account for the draft/prospect value received in compensation for Stone, Duchene, and Pageau combined. |

A Matt Murray buyout of remaining 2 years $6.25M Cap Hit & $15M Salary would save #GoSensGO $5M Cash, and the cap hit/savings would be:
Yr 1 $1.75M Cap Hit ($4.5M Savings)
Yr 2 $750K Cap Hit ($5.5M Savings)
Yr 3 $2.5M Cap Hit/Cost
Yr 4 $2.5M Cap Hit/Cost - Kevin Francis
Methinks Murray WANTS to be bought out and will try to block any trade until he is.
Question is....is Murray cheered or booed when (if) he suits up at CTC next time?
No way they try to do the three headed monster in net now.
Just makes PD and organization look bad.
No idea otherwise why he would block a trade to go to a team where he could easily be the starter.

I am surprised. I was hoping for a big body. A 40 goal scorer is a 40 goal scorer. |

I don't think you understand what 'invested' means. Nobody wants this team to fail, they just have grown to expect it. There is a difference.
This is a big D energy swing by Dorion, and good on him getting it done. Higher price than Fiala but a better goalscorer who has put up similar numbers with significantly less talented linemates, and cost controlled for a year. Cool. |
