Had a source text me this after seeing how Ottawa was willing to move down.

"Also makes you realize they want to draft Rudger in the first round"

Quit building a roster for DJ and his hard rugged play, he wont be here at this time next year! OMG

- Kevin Francis

Jesus God, if they wind up drafting Rutger McGroarty at #7, I'm going to flat-out lose my $hit. This team really does have some kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder around big-body physical types.

First time I've heard his name.

SNET has him ranked 26th.

Rutger McGroarty, C, USNTDP: As a solid two-way option, his personality and leadership qualities make him a viable pick in the latter stages of round one.

Yep, sounds about right...

Funny comment on my Twitter feed about PD!

I use the golden goose analogy. Other GMs have to be careful to not be too egregious in how badly they fleece him. They want to keep him around so those golden eggs just keep coming their way!

You dont give up a top 10 pick to unload a player the team doesn't want and retain salary too. Honestly, PD has NOOOOO business being an NHL GM! Just another notch in the belt for stupidity!

1000000% agree

WTF is this guy smoking man?! how is this the GM of our city & team. So stupid

He better have Palat, Giroux, and Gaudreau on a plane after that

The fan outcry would have been so bad has Murray not nixed the trade....it truly might have signalled the end of PD, like the board potentially would have fired him due to the fanbase going nuts.

Statistically McGroarty actually looks good - way better than Boucher did on paper... the key is to not squander draft capital when you could alternatively trade down. By all accounts and draft predictions, McGroarty should be available well into the 20s. For the sake of understanding what can be done here using an example that leverages pick value charts easily accessible online, the 7 is worth slightly more than 19+25OA picks combined. Seeing the 19 basically landed LA Fiala, in theory Dorion could get a McGroarty at 25 AND an asset that could be used to snag a solid RFA like a Fiala (PPG last season) using the 19. The math shows that in reaching for Boucher last year we essentially gave up the chance for a bonafide top 6 or top 4 player on our roster. If he does it again this year it's only a matter of time before Dorion disappears into the ether.

Like someone said on my Twitter feed.
"There is no threat to Dorion’s job and he knows that. The board are local bean counters and have zero hockey experience. I don’t know what Leblanc does, other than what dorion and some at post media tell him to do. He is literally bullet proof. Sell this team"

Great comment on my Twitter feed.

Hmm i wonder if they have worked out an informal rotation to fleece him. Such as you can only fleece him once every two years. And no butting in.

Dorion: "hey so take Murray and we'll exchange the 7th pick and 16th pick"
Buffalo: "Ok sounds good" (hang up phone)

Buffalo management "this idiot should've agreed to our 9th pick instead of the one we got from Vegas"

Saving money is the absolute top priority for the organization.

It feels like the Board has given PD an internal cap that probably mirrors last year's, meaning the only way he can add to this roster is by paying exorbitant prices to offload salary. Coupled with a directive to be a better team, we might be in for some headscratchers today folks.

The really crazy thing is that this should make Dorion's penchant for wasting $$$ on players like Murray, Dadonov, Zaitsev, Gudbranson, White, Hamonic, etc. all the more unacceptable. They now have a full $3M in buyouts on the books for this year, plus we can only hold our breath in anticipation of the damage yet to come from trying to move on from Murray & Zaitsev. None of that has anything to do with weaponizing their cap space, of course... they're all self-inflected wounds, and in many cases have even interfered with the development of the young players who were supposed to be the emphasis of the rebuild.

Honestly... can they just draft a half-decent player at #7, ideally one who's actually regarded as a consensus top-15/20 prospect this time around? Or at least a RW with top-6 upside so that they're addressing a major gap in the prospect system? This really doesn't have to be so difficult.

Remember when PD told us last year that the money they saved when they traed Dadonov they would spend that on another top 6 forward.....still waiting...this absolute idiot of a GM is unrea!
