I remember the Couturier year and I had a similar thought, even fi Wright's drop isn't as big as Couturier's (which was nonsense at the time).

As for the "bomb" thing you're suggesting, that's too crazy a scenario for a team trying to finally make the slow rebuild it needs.

- Scabeh

Let us not forget that Couturier dealt with mono that year and it contributed to his drop off in play.

It wasn't really a drop off. He just didn't have the year people expected (People thought he would score 60 goals and 140 points or some Crosby poop). That's almost worse than having a bad season for these type of long time top rated prospects.

And please, do not talk to me about Pierre-Luc Dubois, you wouldn’t mention him if he was called Joe Smith…

Technically no. He had 96 points two years in a row. Albeit the second time in 10 less games. I guess many expected him to improve on that 96 by much more and he did not. Im just saying the mono had more to do with it than some wanted to allow.

Whatever the reason I am happy he fell to the Flyers.

Karine
Hains: On TSN's Draft List

Bob MacKenzie’s long awaited final draft list came out yesterday and it’s the Slovak Juraj Slafkovsky who sits in first place.

- Karine Hains

How TSN gets clicks and views... hockey "experts" need some "new take" to talk about after 3+ years of Wright.

Sure, maybe Slafkovsky becomes the next Pavel Bure. Or maybe (probably) he does not. At the end fo the day, I think Wright has the better chance of hitting his expected potential.

Drafting is not an exact science, but you can mitigate your mistakes to give yourself a better chance to succeed.

Once again…this is not some “hockey expert “ trying to get clicks. This is what he does every year. Gets the actual list from some actual nhl head scouts and assigns points to make a sort of “consensus” list. It’s not Bobs opinion at all.

ok but not everyone thinks like Michel Bergeron, it's getting silly if this is mentioned every time we talk about being interested in a Quebec-born player, wtf. really tired of this being brought up all the time.

He clearly stated that if you talked to 10 different scouts, you would likely get a different list.

This is not a real consensus at all.

This is just TSN hype trying to get clicks about something people think is highly accurate, but in actuality, is admittedly extremely subjective by McKenzie himself.

Slafkovsky jumping to the top of the list is just icing on the cake.

Furthermore, if you don't think those scouts have their own agendas, you are crazy.

That’s exactly the point. It isn’t his opinion at all. It’s just a compilation of 10 scouts. A different 10 would have a different outcome. So why anyone is putting any effort into justifying it is crazy. Habs will have their own list. That’s all that really matters. Time for people to move on. I’m betting it’ll be Wright called first.

This reminds me of the Sean Coutourier draft. He was forecast to be the number 1 pick for a very long time. He stumbled over the last few months and dropped to #7 by draft day.

Not saying Wright and Couturier are comparable. But, as someone noted earlier, the boredom factor influences commentary when someone leads the draft for multiple years.

When Couturier dropped out of the #1 projections it happened at after the WJC and long before final lists were put together.

I think this is just smoke. Montreal will take Wright.

The possible alternative to taking Wright is the intriguing story suggesting that the Rangers are open to moving Lafrenierre. It would an absolute bomb if Hughes could parlay the #1 pick with a few other assets and acquire both PLD and Lafrenniere.

- spatso

interesting comparison, althought I would argue that only Larson was a mistake for the ones before picked before Sean at #8 actually :

1 Edmonton Ryan Nugent-Hopkins C Red Deer Rebels [WHL] 719 196 332 528 239 2021-22
1 2 Colorado Gabriel Landeskog L Kitchener Rangers [OHL] 738 248 323 571 601 2021-22
1 3 Florida Jonathan Huberdeau L Saint John Sea Dogs [QMJHL] 671 198 415 613 341 2021-22
1 4 New Jersey Adam Larsson D Skelleftea AIK [SEL] 685 33 129 162 402 2021-22
1 5 NY Islanders Ryan Strome C Niagara IceDogs [OHL] 621 130 227 357 376 2021-22
1 6 Ottawa Mika Zibanejad C Djurgardens IF Stockholm [SEL] 685 229 286 515 185 2021-22
1 7 Winnipeg Mark Scheifele C Barrie Colts [OHL] 642 230 347 577 260 2021-22
1 8 Philadelphia Sean Couturier C Drummondville Voltigeurs [QMJHL] 721 180 280 460 277 2021-22

This.

Burke and the Leafs had Rielly as their #1
I'm sure Bergevin and Timmins had Galchenyuk at #1
Edmonton and whomever was in charge clearly had Yakupov at #1

This happens all the time, we just don't hear about it. I mean look at Dorion on the Sens picking Tyler Boucher out of the (frank)ing blue and then bragging on the radio that he had him in the top-10 of his draft list. Nobody else gave Boucher the time of day.

Or trades of fake Quebec players!!!

Anyway, I will give something to the Habs…. If the objective was to build confusion and hide their true intents to prepare the terrain for potential trades, they definitely succeeded!!!

Then why argue?

My point was the list is garbage (and pretty much always has been), Wright is the safer pick and likelier to hit potential, and all this Slafkovsky stuff is clickbait.

Whatever man.
