Worst to first in 5 years. Hellava job. - 6628
It was longer than that.
Landeskog was drafted in 2011 and MacKinnon was drafted in 2013 soooooo its more like an 11 year rebuild if you count their captain to cup.
Otherwise - meaningful return to the playoffs was 2017-2018 season - meaning 6 years to not suck and after their last very very bad year they drafted Makar and he's kind of been that player to push them over the edge.
Hawks have a long way to go. |

Yes they do, but the Avs are not the only blueprint on how to build a team. It will depend on how their current prospects pan out as well as any acquired in trades and any FA signings they have. If they hit on a goalie that probably speeds it up notably as well as he could cover up for other shortcomings (NYR). |

A recap of Hawks picks in the early 2000's leading up to the Cup runs.
2002 - Keith (2nd round)
2003 - Seabrook (1st - 14th overall), Crawford (2nd), Buff (7th)
2004 - Bolland (2nd), Bickell (2nd), Brouwer (7th)
2005 - Hammer (4th)
2006 - Toews (1st - 3rd OA)
2007 - Kane (1st - 1st OA)
It's interesting to note that of about 50 draft picks between 2002-2005, only 8 picks contributed to the Cup winning teams a decade later. 10 picks out of 66 if you count the 2006 and 2007 draft classes. (Yes, no one besides Toews and Kane made it from the 2006 and 2007 draft.) The "draft success rate" if you want to call it that, comes out at 15 to 16%.
And then corresponding playoff history after those drafts -
2003-2004 through 2008-2009 seasons - Missed Playoffs
2009-2010 season - Won 2 rounds - lost in conference final
2010-2011 season - Won Stanley Cup
A few years of drafting (and then developing) players followed by the two high 1st rounders (and the luck of the draw in getting the 1st overall in 2007) led up to the dynastic years. (Edit - This was augmented by a decent trade or two (Sharp) and the Hossa UFA signing.)
Aside from Debrincat who it seems has one foot out the door, what other young players on the team or in the system compare to the guys drafted from 2002 onward? Maybe Dach if the light bulb turns on. Probably too early to tell with some of the others. Anyway I guess when Davidson said the rebuild may take 5 or 6 years he was looking at the early 2000's as a model. - boilermaker100
So 7 year turn around from square one. And they didn't really get over the hump until they hit on two top 5 picks in Toews and Kane. |

Maybe he can convince Toews and Kane to take on the mentoring role. - LAHawk
I would imagine they're already mentoring (they're both 10+ years in the NHL) and the new coach will help them improve in that aspect. |

Wow, special guy. They tell you before everyone else! |

Hopefully this isn't just talk, and he can actually get through to them:
"He's gonna teach a structured game, but have that flexibility to be creative," Shaw offered. "He was on the back end. He got to see his forwards be creative, and you need that but with that you need structure defensively especially and I think he's going to grow the young prospects coming into Chicago because he's done it time and time again. He knows what it takes to win. He knows what it takes to compete day to day. I think he's going to be great, not just for the young guys, but I think even some of the older veteran defenseman (too)." - Chunk
It makes sense since we have a bunch of young dmen being groomed for the NHL.
I do agree with GP, Vlasic will most likely be playing in the NHL. He looked good with S Jones last year. |

Must be plans for Reichel to play with the big boys this upcoming season, want him to stay in Chicago and train this summer |

I think he'll play the season in Rockford, like Mitchell did this past season. My guess is that the Hawks will take a slow and cautious approach to Vlasic's development.
Barring any trades or UFA signings, I'd expect the following D to start the season.
S. Jones
C. Murphy
J. McCabe
R. Stillman
I. Mitchell
A. Regula
The #7 spot will be interesting, if he's still with the team I think Beaudin will start as the extra d-man. Beaudin will require waivers to be sent to Rockford, they may send him down eventually but I think he'll start the season with the Blackhawks. - DarthKane
You might be right, but that is too many righties. And none of them are agile enough to play their offside. But I really hope Davidson ships Murphy off. He is terrible |

If they do sign Caleb Jones really hope is just for $1 mil |

They sure do and Sakic mentioning they had some pieces already in place.....do the Hawks have younger pieces in place to build around?
Biggest thing will be hitting on and developing the picks/prospects they do acquire.
I will say I agree with LA...I don't know if Hagel was beat up but he looked a step slow a lot of the playoffs in key situations where he was just off/slow enough to not convert on the depth goals that are invaluable come postseason. Hope the kid has long term success in Tampa, but very happy the Hawks sold high when they did. |

I hope he's one of the first to go.....let him be somebody else's problem when he runs himself out of position trying to line up a guy, only to blow himself up and get a subsequent injury. - SteveRain
Or get a stupid penalty because by the time he gets there the puck is already gone. |

I will say ESPN/ABC did a great job.....pregame, intermission, post game was fantastic. Ray grew on me from a broadcasting perspective...Emily Kaplan was 10000% better than Pierre, or Boucher or anyone else NBC had....
Most importantly...the extended coverage on the ice and not just showing 3-4 guys skating with the cup and cutting away to local news....got to see guys and their families which was an outstanding touch....saw that 1st hand in 2015 at the UC, but seeing it again on TV....just a great variable to help grow the game.
Only thing I didn't like was the cup patch, and they need to get back to putting the playoffs/cup final logo somewhere on the ice...I get that they need blue line area to roll their digital ads.....but they can find a home for it. |

17 wasn't square one because they clearly tried to win last year.
And they don't have nearly the talent in their org that they did the first 5 years of the resurgence.
This year would be year one at this stage. |
