Rushing to re-sign him? How do you figure? In what week are 3rd string goalies supposed to be signed?

The team needs to have a veteran goalie on the team for obvious reasons. So they have a guy that fits the bill: he isn't looking for guaranteed playing time, he is great in the room and he proved last year he can be a serviceable goalie. At 1.5 mill he is surely going to be a backup. The move is not indicative in any way of who their starter is going to be.

So again, why do so many have their panties in a jumble? He fills a (minor) need perfectly.

- Slump Buster

I’m no where near assuming he’s gonna be 3rd strong

this guy gets it

and they had the cap space to grab 2 or 3 impact guys on short deals without giving up many assets

- homiedclown

So signing an insurance policy prohibits us from making other moves? Good to know.

pat lalime stats as a sabre
.901 save % 2.98 gaa

craig anderson
.897 save % 3.12 gaa

- homiedclown

You keep using this. What was his save percentage before he got hurt? He had the most wins of any Sabres goalie last year. Maybe the team played better when he was playing. Not everything is a 1 or 0 in sports.

I’ve been saying it for several years, that we should trade Eichel, Sam and Risto and do a rebuild correctly. It seems like we are doing that. Some posters still in denial here
- Fattony1187

you have dahlin and power

2 first overall picks on the roster

you have cozens, casey, kreebs, tage for centers

you have quinn, peterka for young wingers with promise

you have skinner

you have a pp specialist goal scorer in olofsson

you have your vets in okposo and girgens

you have samuelsson and joker to go with your 2 number 1 picks overall on D

you have 3 first rd picks this year

this is exactly when you use your cap space to get 2 or 3 impactful guys on short term deals costing next to nothing in assets

instead we are making paper moves to get to the floor and bringing back the 41 year old who was 44th in save %

this is when you overpay for 2 guys on short term deals, before you have to pay your core

But you don't know that he won't. They might not even know that answer yet. That's why it isn't worth stressing over.

Craig and UPL will get games behind the starter. Mark it down.
- TheSabresTaco

July 14: welcome Braden Holtby.
2 x $1.75m

Edit: UPL plays in Roch, target of 50 gms

Makes it more likely than not they won't?

Well I hope that happens before we have to worry about it.
- Buff36

Obviously it would be great to head into the season with kuemper, MAF or husso, but Anderson and upl both played well when healthy in buffalo.

Wait and see approach, if the season is going well, trade for an upgrade.

Downgrade if the season is headed towards the lottery

If the Sabres cared about winning games they’d be chasing two brand new goalies this season with UPL as the #1 in Rochester to start the season.

The argument against bringing in these kinds of guys is that one of the most impressive things that Meatballs has done is to lets the kids play in all of the key spots: end of game (winning or losing), pp, shorthanded, etc. Would we be better next year if we brought in Malkin and Letang? Sure, of course. I'd rather see the kids play in those spots rather than guys who aren't going to be here in 3 years when the window is wide freaking open.

I think Adams is wise to stay the course.

Really curious how anyone makes the case that Anderson played well last season.

I think so much of this is the tail wagging the dog. People really aren't upset that we signed Anderson or traded for Bishop. They are upset that Adams isn't hitting the gas. While these moves may be indicative that Adams is going to stay the course they are in no freaking way going to restrict him in making any move that he wants.

not for 1.5 mil

he is either a 1B

or the backup

- homiedclown

money isn't a concern, as you know. 11 years of suck is ridiculous, but, I'm being oatient until KA's final moves. If it ends up being UPL 1 and Andy 2, then that would be a bad mistake

He played really well for much of the season and then struggled later on, possibly to due to over-use. I think his stats ended up bring pretty average when you put it altogether. He looked like a star compared to the other scrubs we ran out there (other than UPL).

letang for 2 years is an upgrade over joker
kadri/malkin for 2 years is an upgrade over casey

if tage was a bum shoulder and casey has a wonky groin it's another wasted season

I don't hate Yurov at 16. It's a great value pick. Miro, I don't know.

That's just it. If they had just signed Anderson, you might have an argument, but couple that with the Bishop move and you're likely looking at a boring offseason. Adams made a cap floor move in June. Teams looking to make significant upgrades don't do that before free agency let alone before the draft.

And yes, I am well aware of his explanation yesterday about agents and negotiation leverage, and it was incredibly eye-roll worthy. It reeks of either paranoia or bullpoop, and neither one is a good thing for hopes of seeing a significantly improved team next year.

Again, these guys won't be here in 3 years. You don't bring in either guy to be the crusty old vet like Okposo - you would be bringing them in to be top-line players. I want to see the kids continuing to play in those roles.

I am sure Adams is more than open to making a hockey move for a younger guy.

right, that is where all your picks from this draft and the last few drafts are for, filling those gaps

instead we are waiting 3 more years for those guys
