I’m entirely ignorant when it comes to assistant coaches. Is this good, bad or meh?

EAST MEADOW, NY (July 5, 2022) – The New York Islanders announced today that Doug Houda and Brian Wiseman have been named Assistant Coaches.

Houda joins the Islanders after six seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Detroit Red Wings. Prior to his time in Detroit, Houda worked 10 seasons in the same role with the Boston Bruins, winning the Stanley Cup in 2011. Houda also spent three seasons as an Assistant Coach in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans from 2003-06.

A native of Blairmore, Alberta, Houda was drafted by the Red Wings in the second round (28th overall) of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He played defense for two seasons with the Islanders (1996-97 and 1997-98), scoring 13 points (three goals and 10 assists). Houda played 561 NHL games with the Red Wings, Hartford Whalers, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, Islanders and Anaheim Mighty Ducks between 1985-03, recording 82 points (19-63-82).

Houda’s 17-year playing career included 553 American Hockey League and International Hockey League games with the Adirondack Red Wings, Rochester Americans and Utah Grizzlies. He scored 238 points (55 goals and 183 assists). He captured a Calder Cup championship during his time in the AHL with Rochester in 1995-96.

Wiseman, a native of Chatham, Ontario, spent the last three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers as an Assistant Coach. Prior to his years in Edmonton, he was an Assistant Coach at the University of Michigan for eight seasons (2011-12 through 2018-19). He also served as an Assistant Coach for the Houston Aeros (American Hockey League) and Princeton University.

He was drafted by the New York Rangers in the 12th round (257th overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL playing debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing three games during the 1996-97 season.

Wiseman split six seasons between the International Hockey League (IHL) and the AHL, scoring 515 points (145 goals and 370 assists) in 446 games. In 1998-99, he was the IHL's leading scorer and league MVP, while leading the Aeros to the Turner Cup. He also served as captain with the Aeros in the 1999-2000 season. Wiseman played four years for the Wolverines (1990-94), where he ranks third all-time with 348 points (184 goals and 164 assists) in 166 career games.

I guess Wiseman was up in your neck of the woods. Dreger tweeted last Thursday that he was apparently somewhat highly sought after.

There will be some change to the Oilers coaching staff. Brian Wiseman is moving on and has strong interest from a variety of teams. Gulutzan and Manson expected to stay on to assist Jay Woodcroft.

Pretty excited to see what Lambert and his staff can do this season. Looking forward to seeing the style of play he implements. Also wondering what uncle Lou has up his sleeve this week at the draft. I can’t see us keeping the pick.

Agreed.

Also very stoked to see if the Lee we all love is officially back. He really picked up his game in the second half.

Yeah he did. I assume that’s when he was fully recovered from his surgery. Hoping we see that version of Lee to start the season. I’m sure Lambert’s game plan/system will be very similar to trotz’s but I’m wondering how much?
