Hugo must still think there's some value there, as I do.
Hell the guy completely fell off a cliff, only to regain somewhat with the regime change.
I know, I know..

I don't think it's that crazy to think he still has value, it isn't like his game had been declining badly for a few years, it was just a complete cluster(frank) last season lol

Well teams are calling, so...
After Klingberg and Letang I am not sure there's a lot of good puck moving d on the UFA market. And teams are always looking for a good RHD. |

Started playing better when his wife (frank)ed off to Michigan. Maybe a coincidence though |

I really don't get the rhetoric going around that the Habs are going to have to add a pick to get a team to take Petry.
I understand that the first 50 games of last year were a cluster (frank), for well documented reasons. But the guy has been a solid and highly productive D man for years... and he regained his form somewhat under St. Louis. I get that we won't get the moon for him in a trade because of his contract status, but he is still a highly serviceable defenceman. |

Hughes was pretty clear about that, no way they will give picks away to dump contracts |

which is a good thing, because it would be counter-productive to what he's trying to do

Exactly. However, we do have way too many picks this year. I hope he takes a page out of Bergy's book and trades some of them for picks in future years, making sure our cupboards stay perpetually stocked.
I hope he doesn't use them to trade up too often though, as I remember seeing a Travis Yost article detailing the %'s of drafting with multiple picks versus moving up and it rarely ever pays off. |

agreed. you can't find any of those "gems" in the later rounds if you don't ever pick there. but I have a good feeling about this Hughes and Gorton combo, I think they know where they're going with this, they have a solid plan and are going to stick to it. |

Yeah, the thing is also, the Habs have so many prospects in the system that they can't even sign most of the players they draft.
If you look at the reserve list on Capfriendly they have enough to add players, but they are going to just cycle out of our prospect pool if they aren't signed.
I just noticed that unless Logan Mailloux is offered a contract before June 1st 2023, he becomes a UFA... which seems pretty fast to me, no?

I have no clue what the specific rules are in this case, but this surely gives them enough time to figure things out with him.
and about the number of prospects, I don't think they have that many elite prospects right now to become a real problem, they do have some good dmen coming up but in terms of forwards and goalies it seems a bit thin. |

Yeah, we have basically nothing of interest in the pipeline as far as forwards go. I reserve judgement on Kidney and Roy until I see what they can do at the AHL level, however their Draft+1 years at the CHL level are very promising.
Which is why I am shocked when you see people make ridiculous trade proposals for the 2OA from NJD, and then say 'They should pick Wright and Nemec'... Can we give ourselves a chance to draft some high end forwards, please? lmao |

well HB wouldn't be what it is without the ridiculous trade proposals, right?
besides, most of the folks making the proposals probably haven't even seen these kids play, so...

Honestly, HB seems like a bastion of rationality and sanity compared to the bullpoop trades you see floating around on Twitter. |

I only started reading the stuff up there since Hughes last press conference.
Basically, everyone on Hockey Twitter is either BroncoHorvath or Komisaurus Rex. There is no in between. |

It's a distinct possibility, but I guess we'll see.
I hope the kid continues to show contrition and continues to go through the steps he needs to prove to everyone that he understands what he did was wrong... but also there needs to be a road to redemption for him, you know?
I hope he's allowed to just put his head down, do the work he needs to and continue his career. |

that is why teams will favor US college players, you have 4 years to sign them.
unlike canadians junior league 2 years.

if he does want to play in MTL, I do hope he gets the chance if he does all the right things, would be welcomed change instead of just applying cancel culture and moving on. |
