Yes, the Sabres are bad. I honestly can't think of all the coaches except Bylsma was there at one point. I'm too lazy to look up the others. I love it when people cite that RR will be on his third coach here as if he was the sole reason we suck and why the coaches failed. The team is a mess just like the Sabres. Nobody ever proclaimed RR to be a savior from my recollection. - Don Nachbaur
You're missing it. That's being said to counteract the thought that the next coach, Tortorella is going to "fix" Ristolainen. When all the other coaches before him couldn't. Ristolainen supporters keep wanting to lower the standard. Now it's he wasn't proclaimed to be a savior. What was he proclaimed to be? The team gave up a 1st, 2nd and an NHL player for him. The expectation is that he would make somewhat of a difference. He hasn't.

Yep, let's see:
He goes for the hit and is often out of position.
We overpaid for him and are now stuck with him for 5 more years.
Haag (who we hated when here) is better.
He has no hockey sense.
He would be a 5-6 Dman (or worse) on a good team.
He brought Sanheim down.
He has played for X number of coaches and still sucks.
He will never improve...
I'm sure I missed a few things but I don't read every single comment every day. - Don Nachbaur
This is not a cogent argument.

We can easily go back to the thread the day the trade was made... many people here were claiming he'd make the Flyers really tough to play against, clean up the net front, and help turn goals against around.
The goal posts have moved very far since then. |

I was optimistic the change of scenery would help RR improve.

It was change of scenery... now it's change of coach... at some point the holdouts just need to admit to themselves that the guy is a better skating Luke Schenn and will never be anything more than that. |

Luke Schenn would have a handful of games a season where he was very good. I haven't seen that at all from Ristolainen. The best description of him as a player I can give is that he is a dumb player.

Having to fire the coach two months into the season just showed that Fletcher didn't understand where a lot of the "malaise" was coming from. - Feanor

Every team has injuries. You can't write off a terrible 82 game season where the team went backwards despite a huge summer roster overhaul just because a few key players got hurt. - Feanor
I am not talking about the season as a whole, I am specifically talking about the Flyers ending 6th worst in the league in GAA. |

He is definitely not a player that should have received a 5 year contract regardless of the AAV.

I dont hate RR like some on this site do, and dont think he is as good as some on this site also. But thats total hyperbole saying risto hasnt had a handful of good games, there was a number of games he was the best D on the ice and was very good. Lots of times he did separate players from the puck and start the transition the other way. Some just turn a blind eye to those moments.

I believe that the hockey department cares very much about winning Cups. They're just very misguided in how to go about accomplishing that. They're still influenced by the old guard who still believes in the old methods. They've lost touch with the modern NHL and how to run in a team in the cap era.
As far as being gifted with great draft positions. The Flyers most likely are going to be back in bubble land and picking middle round. The only reason they have the 5th overall pick this upcoming draft is that injuries saved themselves temporarily from their own incompetence. - MJL
So what exactly would you want the Flyers to do? Are you saying you want them to tank, sell off everyone they have, and be Buffalo and Edmonton for the next 5 years picking at the top of the draft? The Flyers are trying to rebuild on the fly. That is why you hire a coach like Torts and why you have Fletcher as a GM, because that is his specialty. This is what the Flyers tried to do with Hextall also, so its not like the Flyers have changed their philosophy over the past decade or so.
The Flyers are not in cap jail as you have stated. They do not have tons of space but they have space and they have the ability this off season to create more space if they want to. The Flyers also have a good and promising young core of players coming up and plan on adding to that core with the #5 pick. Torts will teach these young core the right way to play and thus the foundation will be built. I do not see Fletcher doing too much this off season, one because he does not have the space and two, because he really does not have the assets to pull off a hockey trade that would make any sense. I see the Flyers next season picking in the top 15 in a deep draft, so they will get another good player, at least that is what I am looking forward to. |

He wants the hextall plan, draft mid pack and develop. Which is what we have been doing for the last decade.
I would prefer to bottom out and get high picks. The mid 1st draft picks dont move the needle unless you get lucky on some late picks

This just looks like Risto clearing the crease and reducing some goals against.
Risto is the train and some poor bastard is the car. |
