I am not a milk drinker anymore, but as a kid I devoured the stuff.
I can understand why my patents went and got the illegal stuff, the 4 of us drank so much milk.
In fact, I cannot remember the last time I drank milk, unless it was a hot chocolate or something like that. - Mashadar
It's funny, to this day fluid milk consumption is still very high with children, yet most people as they get older drink little to none. Ironically, cream, butter, cheese and yogurt have grown in demand greatly for grown up consumers. So there's still good demand, just in different products.
Non pasteurized. A slow pasteurization at a lower temperature is better.... you keep more of the good bacteria. But it's actually illegal to sell unpasteurized milk in canada. Apparently the fear of that like one in a million chance of someone getting quite sick from it was to great a risk, so now it's all pasteurized. It's still healthy.... just not as nutrient rich or bacteria rich. - Habshistory
I grew up on a dairy farm and we drank straight from the tank all the time. We also sold to customers directly who came out and filled gallon jugs all the time. All unpasteurized. They did crack down on that though since then. Scoop some fresh cream off the top of the milk jug onto some fresh raspberries or strawberries from the garden. So good.
huh, interesting. I'd like to try it one day, if the risk of getting salmonella or other bad poop is that low.
but yeah milk is awesome, even if it's pasteurized. - Pat1993
Most "toxiinfection" in the usa (where unpasteurized Milk is legal) are from badly preserved seafood. Raw milk is not very risky frankly. Its what cows give to their own child.

makes sense, I was just under the impression that there were certain bacteria in there that could be an issue for humans, but totally harmless for our bovine friends.

Strawberries should be ready by next week, then that's exactly what I'll be doing.
What area did you grow up?
I am so mad that I am currently taking 10 marks off of all my students final grades.

Me: "Did there grades happen to fall?"

It can be. Salmonella or other bacteria can effect cows, and if they do get it, while not common, can make them very sick. Poor hygiene and environment conditions and poor cooling and storage of the milk are the 2 biggest reasons it can show up in milk.

thanks for the clarification.
it looks like a poop ton of work but I hope you treat your cows nicely, and give them the best conditions possible...

Milk doesn't gel well with most alcohol. But a nice block of cheese does.

Yeah, ours are quite spoiled. They lay in sand bedded stalls, with huge fans cooling the barn. They go to eat and milk on there time ( thus why I like the robots), and we're one of only a few farms in Atlantic Canada that run a pasture system with robots, so they go outside to. Honestly, they live more comfortable lives then many people in this world, despite what some animal activists say๐.

Your cows being able to eat grass outside, i'm sure your milk is better than most. I find it sad that all the milk is however mixed togheter and heated, it kills all the complexity and the flavors that come from your terroir. I have tons of respect for milk farmers, I think we should value their specifity and help them transition towards ร bit more of ร proximity model. I think we dont realize the importance of producing locally to be resilient and that we should value more the work of farmers. What do you think about it Habshistory? Im curious to hear your take on this as i know it's a complex question.
Just remember what olโ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big olโ storm right square in the eye and he says, โGive me your best shot, pal. I can take it.
