We have a pretty deep prospect pool, Taco posted some stuff.

Just noticed Weissbach (nor Sardarian) is on Wheeler's list. I don't think Sard played enough games to get a judgement on him. Weissbach graduated.

Yeah I see it, but throwing in the towel on him after his true rookie season? He's free and a 2020 1st round pick. I'm all in on that steal.
- TheSabresTaco

I highly doubt Calgary management would do that, despite being desperate to make cap space for signing Gaudreau and Tkachuk.

Yeah, Sard is still really young 18, he's got some talent, puts on a few pounds. See him here with maybe the next rnd of prospect signings next year.

Yeah they wouldn't. Wonder if they'd stick Emil Heineman with him or something.

He's at Youngstown, he's tracking to play 4 years at UNH (New Hampshire) unless he's got a big jump this coming year. imo.

There has been some talk that the Sabres’ front office is concerned about what an arbitration award would look like for Olofsson this summer. My understanding is that they feel they have younger players that could fill his role at a cheaper rate. We’ll get to that part shortly.

An arbitration award shouldn’t be anything outrageous based on his current production. It’ll likely be in the range of $4.25 million to $4.5 million. His qualifying offer would be $3.25 million, which is above his current cap hit of $3.05 million.

This disagreement likely comes into place here if the Sabres see his value as a player worth that $3.25 million range, but his award in arbitrations would be $1 million or $1.5 million higher. Logically you think to yourself the Sabres don’t need to worry about their salary cap ceiling.

While that’s true, the issue here is moving off their perceived value of a player. Regardless of the salary cap situation, they don’t want to throw off their valuations in future contract negotiations.

I will continuously share this nugget from Gerbe until they prove otherwise:

They will pay our own players first, Adams doesn't think we need high end big money players to win.

I don't really know what conclusions to draw. If you can get a good RHD for Olofsson, I say do it. I don't think they're afraid to pay guys, but I also don't think they're going to pay guys if they don't think they fit long term.

So while I know some people here are going to get rock hard about the Pegula's not willing to spend a buck, I would say it's a misleading narrative. They will spend money on the guys that they want here for the long term. It's not an awful way to handle business.

I have confidence in the front office for the first time since Darcy Regier acquired Chris Drury. That doesn't mean I'm going to like all the moves they make, but I think they're showing positive long term developments. They've hired a lot of intelligent people and this season is going to be the first one with Kevo, Karmy and the Venture bro.

OK but how do we jive this with PWWTBH when Dahlin and Olo are buddies?

I get it, and the 'cheaper to fill a spot' is going to trigger a lot of people, but if a guy isn't in your long term vision... why pay him?

Go blow a wad on DeBrincat and see if you can use Olofsson to get him. See if you can use a pick or two to get Whitecloud. Or swap Olofsson and Bear. Pay people you actually want here.

Novel concept.

they're all (frank)in' buddies.

Do you guys all recall how we despised the Vanek core because they were all buddies and the phrase "Country Club Atmosphere" was a daily occurrence here?

Who the (frank) needs that. Apparently the Canucks have it rn.

The idea that they'd walk away from an ARB decision for one year of Olofsson because it may mess up their future contracts when they have a poop ton of cap space, and it's only a one year contract, is lunacy.

DeBrincat has a $9M QO after next season, and he'd only have one season to go before becoming a UFA.

"We want cost-effective ELCs who want to be here until they become a financial obstacle to remaining below the cap floor" doesn't have the same ring to it

Why wouldn't they pay him on a one year deal next season, if no trade materializes during this offseason, and look to trade him at the trade deadline?

Answer: Because they're cheap.

You're right, which is why I believe it's the wrong conclusion to draw.

That's atrocious asset management, and if we've learned one thing from Kevo, his asset management has been above average.

I don't really want to open up a Reinhart conversation.. god help me.. but Jason should have paid him long ago, and Kevo should have as well in 2020.
