learning about defensive responsibilities at a young age to become a 2-way center isn't stupid, and isn't a result of bad coaching.

Yes it is…

Even Patrice Bergeron did give a (frank) about 2 way playing when he was in Junior hockey…

I'm sure the Rangers have every intention to have him play for the NYR if he's on the roster come opening night as well.

Read that:

https://www.nbcsports.com...ay-marvel-he-today-bruins

He started to care about playing defensive because he was not good enough offensively and only after he was drafted…. This means he never had worked on his defensive skills before the draft…

Shane Wright has the talent to be an offensive player and not that I am saying he would not have to be a more « complete » player but doing this focus that early in his development is just stupid in my opinion but you can disagree…

ok but you're making 2 huge assumptions here, that 1- all young centers have the same learning curve and hockey IQ as Patrice Bergeron, which means they can all adapt later like he did and 2- Shane Wright's offensive numbers are significantly lower than what they could've been because of his defensive play. in both cases I don't really see it that way at all...

Goal Caufield would never had scored as many goals as he did by focussing on back checking and playing defensively…

I can promise you that Wright would have put more points on the board if he had focus more on scoring goals than trying to mimic Bergeron’s game(which he admitted openly…).

That being said, I would draft Wright in a heartbeat over the Slovak because I think he can develop much more his offense by being properly coached. He will never be a Mac David but he can easily develop into someone like Toews…. which I would take in Habs line-up when he was at his peak…
