If they are guilty they should be punished however Im not going to assume guilt because someone makes an accusation. Innocent until proven guilty. At the end of the day everybody lies. I trust only facts. If I misread something I will accept that

One thing to remember is the Canadian legal system, while broadly similar, is not identical to the US system, so making presumptions based on the latter will inevitably lead to erroneous conclusions.

Beyond that, history clearly shows, in each system, that women who formally accuse men in cases of rape or similar sexual assault crimes are often treated in ways, by both the courts and the media, accusers of other crimes are not. Consequently, it is hardly surprising that few accusations, relative to the number of assaults, are made (this is also true in many other assault cases, sexual or otherwise).

Seeking legal remedy in civil court has not always been an option, but is hardly a dishonourable one. Moreover, blaming the woman for "not naming names" is a misdirected complaint. Reporters covering the story have pushed the issue to the forefront--settlements out of court (of any type of accusation) almost always include non-disclosure agreements. Third parties (like reporters) are not bound by them, but the parties implicated in the settlement are, with serious legal penalties if violated.

Is a settlement ironclad proof of guilt? Certainly not. However, it is not a presumptive case of extortion either, as some online commentary has suggested. In the end, speculation about who is/isn't "guilty" is pointless in the absence of further information. Historical precedence provides ample motivation to avoid open court for the accuser (the record on this point is clear). Precedence also demonstrates the odds of a less problematic outcome for the accused are also found in settlements, far more often than not. And even if it had gone to public, criminal trial, the odds of a "correct" outcome (conviction of accused if guilty, acquittal if innocent) would not be guaranteed either. Exceedingly few cases that go to court go exactly as they "should" in this regard.

The legal system, like life, is messy (though it aims at clarity). To expect otherwise is, at best, naive.
