That had to be called back.
He clearly put his skate in front of the puck to direct it in.
It was an unnatural fall.
It was going in anyway though.
If Coleman just left it alone, we would be playing another game, sadly.
They made the right call.

Because this is hockey not soccer.

It's a joke that the league even adjusted the rule to make it more confusing and say you can redirect but you can't kick a puck into the net.

IMO the rule should just be no goals off a foot or skate or arm, leg, forehead or anything other than a stick if in the opinion/view of the referee there is any indication there is intent to make that contact by the player.
Players would stop putting their body parts forward to 'redirect' a puck and the controversy should be drastically minimized.

Use your stick to redirect and tip and move it around as much as you like but to start saying what is a kicking motion vs a redirection is insane - can you not argue that one can effectively redirect a puck by kicking it?

As far as your suggestion of basically eliminating most video reviews, with the technology that exists for home viewers now no shot they go that route, if the broadcasters and fans can see 5 angles of a play there is no shot the NHL will be ok with the officials not being able to do the same - the outrage would be far too loud for them since they have taken the lid off that jar.

- Cush29

I respectfully disagree. I would venture that a small percentage of goals off a player's skate are actually disallowed for being kicked in. I am of the opinion that I would like less calls judged by officials not more. Watching a few American (ESPN) broadcasts it is amazing to see how much the announcers and crew suck up to the officials. They even have an ex ref commenting on how excellent the officiating is during play by play. The sportsnet/CBC crew is not as kind and call out the officials regularly and IMO rightfully so. Consistency in all rules should be the standard, not look the other way when a vicious cross-check is applied and instantly call a tap to the gloves or pants because that is the penalty flavour of the month.

You disagree and think the rule as it is written and applied currently is fine? To me the % of goals disallowed is somewhat irrelevant and you could argue there should be many more goals disallowed than are depending on how you interpret the rule and the individual play on the ice.

I just can't agree & feel that the rule is terribly written and needs to be rewritten with much more clarity. I fully admit as a goalie I don't think players should be permitted to 'score' with anything other than a stick, to me it's also how the game was designed to be played and yes I'm a traditionalist that way in the same way I don't want nets made bigger etc. I also feel a tie game is fine, and in fact a more fitting ending to an evenly played game even if it's 0-0 (barring playoffs etc. obviously).

Just my thoughts.

It would slow the game down and you'd have a drop in goals. At this point honestly, to make things easier, as long as its not thrown in, punched or hit in with a hand, however the puck crosses the goal line should count. As a someone who has played goal, Id be fine with this. Heck that is pretty much the rule in all the ball hockey leagues Ive played in over past couple of decades.
People are always complaining about not enough goals, well this would speed up the game and allow for more goals.

When Mackinnon scored one of the most beautiful goal of the stanley cup playoffs, I thought they were done.

But they regrouped and scored again.

I also think that Kuemper looked extremely shaky when things got tough.

I had the Avs winning as well, and they probably will.... but the Blues are an impressive bunch of hard workers.

The bolded is the main bone of contention for me. I could care less about more goals but I understand that the NHL seems to want to use goals as a way to 'attract new fans' and 'grow the game'. I guess I just hate the fact they are willing to allow this stuff to change just for that purpose as (to me) it fundamentally changes the game I love.

As far as your comparison between ball hockey - that does not compute for me, ball hockey and ice hockey are totally different and I have no desire to make ice hockey more like ball hockey. They both have their redeeming quirks and nuances but I see no need for hockey games to be more like ball hockey games.

I would have agreed 100% up to a few days ago. Less sure today.

Draisatl, Kane and Hyman are playing great hockey. Far better than I expected.

If McDavid and MacKinnon play each other equal. And the top forwards for Edmonton outplay their Colorado matchups...this series will be decided by average goaltending (on both sides) and the infinite superiority of the Colorado defense.

There’s no way to expect rigid consistency when it comes to rules like kicking the puck or even running the goalie. The circumstances are so specific and minute that it becomes silly to expect exactly the same kind of ruling. A slight change of angle of the skate or a few extra degrees of movement have to be interpreted based on available camera. The key is the calls are made based on interpretations and people will disagree.

How the rule is written is much less relevant than how it is interpreted and enforced by the on ice crew. To think there is no bias at all against certain players and even teams is naive IMO. For that reason, I like less judged calls by officials. When to enforce a rule strictly and when to practice "just let them play" is the part that I really dislike.

I dont care about more goals either....I love hard fought 2-1 games. But the general consensus among the hockey brass, media and new fans...more goals = more fun/entertainment. So if thats their belief, then just allow everything and it will remove most of these goal controversies and save some time in game.
The game evolves, what can we do.

Agree 1000000% & the lack of consistency in officiating in the NHL this season has been pretty epic. Officials are human so there will always be some bias towards players who are 'known as' (insert diver or clean player here) and the calls are made with that factored in 100% IMO.

I'm not sure if there is bias towards teams or not but until the NHL makes changes like actually holding officials accountable, perhaps making them speak to the media, or even goes with off ice officials who can overrule on everything or whatever else they need to do to make it unbiased this will be the state of affairs.

I do wonder if the NHL does alot of statistical analysis on officiating such as does a referee seem to call a disproportionate amount of penalties against a small # of teams etc. and if they do track that info what (if anything) do they do with it?
