Unless you can find a trade partner in the off season. JVR did score over 20 goals playing for one of the worst teams in the league with the worst PP. That has to count for something to maybe a contending team looking to bolster their own PP. If the Flyers cover $2M+ of his salary, I think a team or two may bite. Its worth exploring at least. - jd250
It is highly unlikely any contending team will take JVR for a full season. If he has a good year, he might be able to be moved at the trade deadline.

They aren’t going to have the ability to make a lot of moves. Even if they sign Gaudreau or Kadri. It’s not anywhere close to enough.
Bundy said it best on a very recent podcast, that the team just isn’t going to be there for the next 4-5 years. I actually think that’s a really good, and realistic assessment.
They aren’t in a vacuum, and they have been jumped by the Rangers along with New Jersey. Two clubs that were supposed to be behind the Flyers.
Buffalo has a greater collection of younger talent, Detroit most definitely does as well. Ottawa is knocking on that door, and I think people will see how good Chabot is fairly soon.
There is solace in some of these facts. They will rebuild whether they want to or not. - FlyerFan3260 In what world can the Flyers afford another $8+ MM contract? Yes get rid of JVR and, viola, it fits (maybe). But how many of these multi million dollar contracts that will age terribly can they afford. Most teams have one, maybe two. A few years down the line their list will stand at Couturier, Ellis, Hayes and Risto plus the proposed Kadri/Gaudreau contract. Out of all the major sports, hockey players age the least gracefully. There are exceptions, but we are asking for 4-5 exceptions.

IMO I think Hayes will age fine and be the same players he has always been. 4 years left he will be 40 something point guy. Not saying that is good value. Not much of a concern to me compared with the 2.

It's easy to say but Edmonton was able to get McDavid. Without him they lose to Calgary. McDavid is that generational talent.
Also who did Carolina tank for? They drafted well, developed players and made good trades. - J35Bacher

This a tough one. The first replay I saw, no way did it look like a kicking motion. It just looked like it went in off his skate. But the replay view that Toronto used to disallow the goal, he did move his leg to the puck. It's just not definitive to me that the motion was distinct enough to overturn the call on the ice.

Just watched the game replay. That was a goal in my opinion. Bad call. This is on top of the fact the puck was going in anyway. |

True, but like I said. Lets see if they can compete with Colorado.
Not saying Edmonton isn't on its way, but so far they are way behind schedule IMO to where they should be after all the top 5 picks they have acquired in a relatively short time.
They had the #1 pick in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015

It doesntt matter. Whenever the topic of tanking, process or the ilk is brought up, people and BIll immediately go: Well Edmonton and Buff....blah blah blah
THere are many factors as to why its taken them so long but the bottom line is to put yourself in postion to have the chance to acquire the best talent possible. Selection and team construction is a different topic. |

McDavid is otherworldly and Draisaitl is not far behind. Just don't see them getting past Colorado. Depends on goaltending.

The first conversation that needs to happen is what is tanking.

Let's say the Flyers tank on purpose. They still only have a 25% chance at getting the #1 pick in the draft lottery. Edmonton has been a horrible team for many, many years. Is that what we want? Not me.

Flyers are worse.
flyers have a better shot at getting the top pick by them thinking they have a good team and letting the GM do his "job"

THe flyers have been mediorce to terrible for a decade. Id rather have the talent that Edm and Buff have obtained and the hope that team management can figure out the inadequacies that have held them back. Where are the FLyers? Theye on a dowmward trajectory with no time table of being able to project that they can get to the point where we can hope that they can be a consistent threat to make a legitimate run |

Also who did Carolina tank for? They drafted well, developed players and made good trades. - J35Bacher
Carolina may not have out and out tanked but there was a bottoming out period which resulted in high draft picks like Lindblom and Hanifin who eventually turned into Hamilton, Ferland and Fox. They also had lottery picks like Svechnikov and Jarvis who are playing a huge role on the team as it is now.
Carolina was one of the first teams who invested heavily in analytics, they groomed their coach and nailed picks outside of the first round like Aho, Slavin and Pesce. Even if they didn't tank, they still drafted fairly high at times, and very well as you stated. But they also took unconventional paths to get to where they are now. The Flyers only just started investing in analytics. I also don't believe there is a Rod Brind'Amour in the ranks of development or coaches.
I'd also argue that all the teams left in the playoffs had bottoming out periods at different times. Tampa had high picks like Hedman and Stamkos. Colorado's core is made up entirely of lottery picks (Mackinnon, Makar, Rantanen, Landeskog). NYR got lucky by winning the lottery and falling into Panarin and Fox, but they certainly bottomed out too. And obviously Edmonton. |

To me, Carolina is the model franchise and why I have been a big proponenent of hiring this guy as GM

Interviewed for Chicago's open GM position not too long ago. He was also in the Flyers backyard writing for BSH for years and they never bothered to pick his brain. |
