It was a risk back then.
One Dubas didn't want to take.
One the Oilers had to take.... because they could have missed the playoffs if things kept going the way they were.
I would have stayed away as well if I was a contending team.
Turns out he could have been the diffrence in the first round.
Bottom line: What the (frank) do I know about anything? - Scabeh
The Oilers were the 17th placed team with a winning percentage of .564 on January 28th.
Kane played his first game on January 29th. They played 5 more games with Dave Tippett and went 2-2-1 and on February 10th, Tippett was relieved of his coaching duties.
Then Woodcroft took over and the Oilers were the 3rd best team in the league from February 11 onwards with a winning percentage of .724% - the only teams better were Florida (.757%) and Calgary (slightly better .724%).
Kane is having great success this year. DeAngelo has been excellent for Carolina. How long until one or both does something to hurt the organizations that are treating them so well? I hope Kane continues to work for the Oilers because it's fun to watch - but at some point I fear he's going to drag those around him down with him when he does his next dumb thing. |

I don't think it will happen this year as both Kane and DeAngelo are looking for a big contract again. Think that once they get their new deals, with whatever teams signs them, then they will revert back to their old ways. So, next season

I wouldn't be opposed to not giving Engvall a qualifying offer and promoting from the marlies.

I would absolutely qualify him. Qualify him at $1.25m and you keep his rights until the arbitration hearing - if it goes that far. If you don't like the result, then walk away. He's a 25 year old, 15 goal scorer who plays a prominent defensive role on the team and gets few offensive opportunities. He's an excellent contributor to puck possession play, and has a high defensive IQ. He had a poor playoff round, but it's hardly his fault the team didn't win.
I can't see anyone on the Marlies coming up and replacing what he or Mikheyev did for this team on the 3rd line. |

As much as some teams would like Nylander for his scoring ability its his soft play, multiple games where he disappears and $7 mil cap hit that would not bring him the return that the Leafs would want or need. He isn't going to bring a top pairing d-man. - islansjet

At most, I could see Nick Robertson and Joey Anderson up full time... Maybe even Rubins, if Boosh walks and they don't sign anyone to replace Boosh |

I saw someone mention Sam Gagner as a possible 4th line guy on a league minimum contract. Had 31 points and led Wings in PK minutes. Plus, he and JT are buds and business partners |

I have no qualms with signing Gagner, if he wants to come here. He's not a big guy, but he could probably fill the "I'm slightly better than Tyler Ennis" quota required on the fourth line. I'd still like to keep Engvall if it's reasonable.
Edit: Gagner had a 34% face off percentage on the PK. That's bloody terrible. In the interest of curiousity, I took all penalty killers who had at least 80 faceoffs and looked at their percentages. Out of 66 forwards, Gagner was 62nd. Kampf wasn't brilliant either, for the record, at 46.9% - or 28th among those forwards.
I'd like the PK to start with the puck more, clear it, and then setup to prevent clean zone entry (which, you know, is sort of obvious all things considered). |

First game in a month that they got 3 homers in a single game. Insane with what this team should be doing. |

I like him too. The only downside is that he has arbitration rights and the Leafs would be obligated to accept any ruling up to $4.5M. Obviously, it wouldn’t go that high but there’s a risk to keeping him. |

Last night one of the commentators said McDavid asked for the Oilers to go out and trade for Kane. Wonder if just knowing that the world's best player is on your side has a lot to do with his cleaning up his act for Edmonton..
Remember when Kane scored and flashed the 7 fingers. We saw McDavid's reaction he was very unhappy. My guess is he told Kane to cut the hot dog. McDavid may have the leadership skills to go with his natural hockey skills. I hope the Kane story ends up being a positive turn around for everyone.
