Obviously we don't know each moving part, but the lack of cap space severely hinders the ability to make meaningful improvements.

Start at forward...Kase and Engvall are RFAs. Let's say they come back with modest raises. Or maybe Kase walks and you use his $1.25M on some other depth forward. Not moving the needle. Spezza and Blackwell are UFAs making league minimum. So they either come back or are replaced with some other league minimum player. Now Mikheyev making $1.6M. Does he agree to $3M? Great. Basically the same forward group. Oh wait, Nylander gets traded for Pesce or Dumba or some other 3-4 guy? Because you aren't getting a top pair d-man for Nylander.

How about defense. Rielly and Gio have NMCs. Muzzin, Brodie, Holl have NTCs. So what's the plan. Try to move one of these guys to a team not on the NTC list. Sounds easy.

Now in net you're stuck with Mrazek at $3.8M. Bring back Campbell? He's going to need more than the current $1.65M. Let Campbell walk and bring in Holtby? Maybe buy out Mrazek and bring in MAF? None of this moves the needle.

As for using draft picks to entice teams to take on a trash contract...the Leafs have already traded away their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th round picks this year. And their 2nd next year. Did I mention the cupboards are bare?

Anyway, you are right that we don't know the full supporting cast, but it's pretty clear that massive changes aren't realistic.

Top of the honeydoo list has got to be a #1 'tender. I think it's Campbell or trade/sign something better. Can't see him running it back and crossing his fingers on his goalies.

Not sure Nylander's Cap-hit/salary is the issue per-se (I think his deal is reasonable).

It's the way the deal was done. That indirectly led to Marner and Matthews getting paid highly, but without the long terms.
