Yes Mike, Dubas might have to make some tough decisions like trading either broken down, multi-concussed Jake Muzzin or a 26 year old, 34 goal scorer. Let’s bring AA for a second opinion on this one. I love Muzzin and he held it together far better than expected in the playoffs than there’s no reason to assume he survives a full season and he was pretty poopty for a good chunk of the last one. The left side of the D is also kind of crowded

maybe he wasnt a Leaf at that point?
or just promoted.. - senstroll
Dubas signed Holl.
He was signed to an AHL contract which Dubas was in charge of back then. |

As much as some teams would like Nylander for his scoring ability its his soft play, multiple games where he disappears and $7 mil cap hit that would not bring him the return that the Leafs would want or need. He isn't going to bring a top pairing d-man. - islansjet

Muzzin is a young 33 though.. Still got a lot left in the tank.. Nylander's done.. Anyone born in 1996 always fails at the NHL level except for Pastrnak, Point and uhh.. ummm.. Jake Evans? |

Uh?
There are many reasons why the leafs arent going to trade Matthews and start over.
They dont need to start over, we waited decades to get a top line center (now we have two'ish) and a top line winger to play with the 1C.
Unless Matthews tells them he is not resigning, he wont be traded. In fact, once he's able to sign an extension I think the leafs will approach him (unless something crazy happens in the next year) - Fakepartofme
The problem is Matthews has 2 more years left. In those 2 years the Leafs are unlikely to compete for a Cup because of the poor supporting cast. Tavares is a 2nd line player who should be making $6-7M, not $11M. Marner is an elite winger, but guys like Draisitl, Kucherov, Kaprizov are all in the $8.5M to $9.5M range, whereas Marner is $10.9M. A few million here, a couple million there, and the consequences is awful depth. Look at Kyle Connor who just locked in for just over $7M. Swap him for Marner and you have almost $4M of cap space.
So fast forward 2 years. More playoff failures. Now Dubas either watches Matthews walk away for nothing, or succumbs to what could be a ridiculous demand. I'm thinking $15M x 8 years, NMC, front loaded. Now what? Matthews, Marner, and a bunch of bad depth. Did I mention how bare the cupboard are of draft picks and prospects. So there isn't much help coming. It's ugly.
By trading Matthews you can reset the franchise. Add 2-3 promising players and 2-3 first round picks.
But OK. Forget that. Make a bold move as suggested in this article. So trade Nylander for Brett Pesce. Try to sign Mikheyev. Maybe buyout Mrazek and try Braden Holtby. Another year of Wayne Simmonds and Kyle Clifford, with Jason Spezza begging to play again too. That's BOLD! Haha. |

What an amazing team.
Can’t remember the last Leaf team that went six years straight in the playoffs, WOW.
Matthews is the greatest human being to ever exist. John Tavares is the best captain EVER.
Morgan Reilly is a God on skates. I mean I’ve never seen a better defence assembled by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wow 😍

Its possible Muzzin is traded.
Friedman says he loves Toronto and wants to stay this year.
On the flip side his NTC ends after this season. He can only choose 10 teams not to get traded to.
He had a great playoff...there is a good chance a lot of the league will be interested and GOOD teams.
Next season? Leafs could dump him to 22 teams.
If he knows he is likely gone next season maybe he accepts a trade this year if he is going to a decent team |

If they are going to bring in an impact defenseman or goalie, then someone like Muzzin needs to be moved.. If It's Mrazek and Holl, that only frees $5.8M and they still need to address other areas of the roster..
They need a goalie, a 2nd line LW, a revamped 4th line and bring back Boosh

Mrazek, Holl to the Ducks for Stolarz, Sam Carrick; resign Campbell at reasonable cap hit. 1A/B, Carrick 4RW/depth guy with a year left.
Boosh probably walks, but I wouldn't mind bringing him back as depth, but I don't think he's right as a first pairing guy with Rielly. I would rather Lilly over him playing with Rielly.
