I’m a sucker for character players/coaches. I miss the Roenick, Hartnell and Pronger sound bites. Torts will bring that kind of entertainment away from the ice, while we suck.

I’m kinda warming up to him just with the comments about Pittsburgh’s two whining stars….
Gotta admit he wouldn’t be dull.

- landros 2

It would not be dull, but I couldn't guarantee it would not be a clown show either. In the end its entertaining as long as you are winning, however when was the last time Torts won anything? The last time he made a series playoff run was 10 years ago.

It is not nonsense. A culture is the expression of a team's values, attitudes, and beliefs about sports and competition. Winning and losing can affect culture but it is not culture itself

This statement is incorrect. You left no room for a lateral move.

"Not lateral at all. Konecny has a top 6 role on the team. Replacing him alters the team considerably. Get a worse player and the team suffers, get a better player and the team improves."

How many cracks do the leafs get with this core? Its not like they are even close, haven't won a playoff round in ages. Maybe if they made it to the conference finals I would agree, but they cant win 1 round
- bradster

As many as it takes. Their core pieces are 24 years old. In past years the Leafs were just awful in series clinching games, this year was different. They pushed but couldnt finish it. They just need some killer instinct.

In a perfect world, they should move Tavares to fill out the roster better but he has a NMC. Trading Marner, Matthews or Nylander would just hurt the team. Although a Flyer fan can always hope one of the 3 is available

Remember when you claimed that with the moves Fletcher made last Summer, he changed the culture of the team? How did that work out?

So who are the other coaches the Flyers interviewed? And why is it so hush hush?

In other sports it seems there is a lot of transparency. Flyers once again treating something like they’re guarding high level CIA intel.

It did not work out too well in terms of the results of the season. However there were a lot of factors in play that you simply can't ignore. First, it has become apparent that the team turned on and tuned out AV. Second, the team did not ice their entire roster for a single time the entire season due to injuries. Third, the injuries were to top players on the team. Fourth, a head coach with clout was never hired to replace AV. So with all these things in play, how can you really evaluate anything at this point?

I will say this however. This team fought for every game even after it was clear that they had no shot of making the playoffs, even after Giroux was traded and even till the last game of the season. Also, the team did not suffer from that many bad starts compared to previous seasons. These are not huge consolations to an awful season, but to me are signs that the culture was different compared to the 20-21 season.

No trade is guaranteed to improve or weaken the team. Sometimes the end result is the team stays the same. Not to mention that without knowing what the actual deal is, it's only speculation what the outcome is going to be.

I saw a different team. The only way you change the culture of a team is to improve the team. Winning changes the culture. A team lacking talent can only work so hard. Culture is a word thrown around here as if it is actually a factor. This team is not good not because of a bad culture with the players. It's bad because they lack talent. They're mismanaged and they have an archaic management that has no clue on how to build a hockey team in the modern day NHL

Many of you rebuild guys are critical of the RR contract. But while I agree the initial signing was bad, the new contract might be a blessing in disguise. This is because, if I understand correctly, RR's WAR is in the low single digits, barely above zero.

If you believe in WAR being the best estimator of player's worth, that would mean RR's impact on a game is pretty much the same as a AHL replacement level call-up. Thing is, those scrubs don't get 5m+ a year. We are essentially getting a 1.5 m level play from a guy and giving him 5, which is like saying we are carrying a net deficit of 3.5 m a year like a dead cap charge (which should be a nice boost to tanking hopes).

What part of "Not a guaranteed lateral move" wasnt clear? I reworded it and yet you still go on. The original post was meant to point out theres more than just lateral. I dont understand why you need to make things more complicated than they are. Who is in the trade is not relevant. The possible results are stay the same, get worse or get better. End of story. We are not actually making a trade.

Are they going to be tanking for 5 years during the entire Ristolainen contract? Ristolainen is destined to be a 3rd pair defenseman towards the end of his deal and even more dead weight than he is now. Although it's not at all a stretch to think this team is going to be mediocre to bad for the next 5 years and that they won't be anywhere close to being a legit contender for that time period

Your original statement did not include that. Now that you've been corrected in what the actual outcomes are, you're pretending that was part of your original premise. In what world is who is in the trade not relevant when looking at the impact it makes on the team?

Oh my god.... you cant read can you. I am not claiming it was written on my original hence why I reworded it. The whole point was to say a lateral was not the gospel.

Who is in the trade isnt relevant because there is no trade. I dont know how to make that any clearer. The post has always been about the fact that the team could also get worse or better if Konecny is traded. No one is making hypothetical deals. A lateral move is less likely because its hard to find a player who is exactly like another but possible.

I cannot disagree with you, this team even with a completely healthy lineup lacked speed and top end talent. We saw it time and time again that the team had to work so hard just to score a goal, that they frequently created grade A looks but could not finish. Look, I never for a second thought this team would be a cup contender, but I thought on paper coming into this season they would make the playoffs. As you know, but probably will not admit, I have been harping on this team lacking speed and top end talent for quite some time. I liked the Ellis trade quite a bit, and I know you didn't, but in hindsight trading for Risto instead of trying to obtain more speed and top end talent was a bad move.

A lateral move is not getting a player who is exactly like another.

It's worse than I thought. A lateral move is a move that doesn't make the team better or worse. It keeps the team at the same level. It's where the phrase rearranging the deck chairs come from. I'm not sure why that needs to be explained but apparently it does.
