To get into the playoffs and be a "good team" having positive shot shares and a good penalty kill are pretty good determining success factors.
Come playoff time - for any sport, even baseball - the best team doesn't always win an elimination tournament. The Dodgers have been probably the best team and well run organization in baseball the last half dozen years and have one world series to show for it. Based on the statistics the White Sox should have 4 or 5 fewer wins then they do now.
The numbers aren't everything but more often then not they are a fairly reliable predictor of success. Based on the anything can happen in the playoffs can happen principle highlighted above - getting there should be the focus and hopefully a team is talented, healthy and dialed in enough to go deep. - fattybeef
I don't disagree that is somewhat of a crap shoot come playoff time, but some of these analytical teams are strickly built on beating the average 6 out of 10 times and likely why they fail come playoff time in shorter series where the margin for error hurts a helluva lot more.
Some teams are built for the regular season and have success....and some teams are built for the playoffs and become a VERY tough out....Think back how many years the Hawks had to go 6 games vs an undermanned Nashville team that was built more for the playoffs than the regular season. STL seems to be that new norm and losing Binnington will likely seal their fate this year.....
Just very curious how KD builds this roster....was it after the strike the Hawks loaded up on aging veterans and just flat out sucked trying to copy the heavy game that i think at the time Tampa and Calgary had just shown was a key to success?
To me...they need speed. Speed always kills. Forecheck, tilting the ice, etc.....Bigger guys who can hit, with speed, and chip in some goals are essentially the unicorns the championship teams always seem to have.
Lastly, with a younger team it's going to imperative guys quickly fall in line and take over spots the team needs to win.....find their niche in the show and guys like that already I am looking at Kirby Dach...if he solves that 3C role, PK, and pot 15-20 a year.....you have that solved.

Enjoying the analytics debate. I think use of analytics are a great way to determine present value of the players. They should be an integral part in every free agent signing and contract given to veteran players. If the previous regime had any concern for analytics, they clearly went out the window when we traded for Seth Jones and gave him that massive contract. Analytics are a useful tool in filling out a roster and avoiding horrible contracts that have plagued the Hawks for the past 5-6 years.
But, ultimately the way to build a cup contender is through drafting and developing young players. Every cup team in my memory has been led by players drafted and developed within their own system. While analytics are very useful in determining how good a player is now, they are very limited in determining how a player is going to grow, develop and adjust from juniors into professional hockey. I think the eye test is still the best way to scout players and coaching is the best way to develop them.

Yes yes yes what great idea hawks would have add dcat that deal to. - Scott1977
Nah, there’s room for both DeBrincat and Caufield on the Blackhawks. Literally, they’re not that tall and don’t take up much space. |

Can someone refresh me on who Mexico hawk was?
you can do it in a PR if you don't want to polute the board.
Was it the guy who said he was a former player, and then I contacted the father of the real player who told me the real whereabouts of his son?
I am overloaded with non my real surroundings info, gossip, and much is hockey overload info.
I needs a refresh on this one.... |

Considering his initial moves and his comments at the press conferences, you are going to love KD. Lafferty, Raddysh both bring some size and speed. He's said several times in interviews that he values speed (not only skating, but processing the game as well).

I guess Duclair is not making that impact that the Hawks gave up on, he has been scratched the last 2 games. |

The Panthers really choked in this series. They’ll be back next year for sure, but this was a tough way to go out. Florida scored 3 goals in this series….3. We know how that feels. |

New blog! Thoughts on how the Filip Roos signing impacts the composition of the Blackhawks and IceHogs D corps.
