Yeah I mean his 1.81 GAA and .934 is a pretty great ceiling
- Aaron_85

If those were his numbers in these playoffs, we’re playing Florida right now. Maybe he returns to early season Jack, the guy we all thought we’d be paying $5 or 6M. But Leafs mgt doesn’t think so or they wouldn’t have offered $2.75 or whatever it was.

The dream scenario would be Husso and Vanacek for under 5m total
- mr.sir

Husso has a total 54 NHL games, he seems like another campbell'esque goalie, but his numbers are ok...nothing great.
Vanacek also has less than 100 nhl games under his belt and his stats are ok as well.
Not sure I'd trust either to take the leafs to the promise land yet.

Both Husso and Vanecek struggled in this years playoffs..
In his two games, Vanecek had a GAA of 4.21 and a save % of .863

I wouldn't feel more confident in net with one of these guys over Campbell that's for sure.

Same.. I don't think any of them would make me go ' hey, now we're winning'

If Campbell walks as a free agent, does Dubas go after Varlamov or go for a unproven "diamond in the rough"?

Varlamov has won a playoff series or two.

Varlamov would be an interesting pickup. Not quite sure what his perceived value is after last season but he's been reliable in the past and that counts for something.

From last blog, but something I think you keep overlooking:

So they missed 2x after drafting Stamkos. 1 year after drafting Hedman they made it to CON FINALS.

You can't see the difference?

- Nasty_Duck

So, Tampa drafts Stamkos in 2008, and Hedman in 2009. They miss the playoffs in both 2009 and 2010 before reaching the Conference finals in 2011. The do miss the playoffs in each of 2012 and 2013, by the way, and lose in the first round the next year. So perhaps 2011 was an anomally. I mean what was different then?

They drew the Penguins in the first round. The Penguins without BOTH Malkin and Crosby. I mean, ouch.

They did follow that up by crushing the Capitals, but in 2011 crushing the Capitals in the playoffs was just what teams did - it was Pittsburgh's pastime. I mean, they had Neuvirth in net instead of either Holtby or Varlamov, but, I don't know. A 4-0 sweep still deserves props so there is that.

I would more say that similarly - Tampa spent a fair bit of time on the down side of success before they found their high - and they had an easier path to success than any team competing in the Atlantic does today.

Varlamov has 5 mil cap hit. If you are going to trade for him, retained salary would be required or move out 5mil in return.
Would Lou do a Mrazek for Varlamov deal???

Don't think so, remember the still had Vinny and StLouis.
They both started declining after that season.

Forsberg would be a nice fit.
Would also take Kane on the cheap.

Well you said we know his ceiling and it's pretty high in my opinion so he's worth a contract extension. I just wouldn't commit too much term or dollars to him.

I'd do a 1 year 4 million contract.

This is my issue with the goalie market this year. No one is coming into Toronto without question marks. Including Campbell. Leafs have gotten "back ups poised for starters" before and it worked out worse than Campbell has so I'm not super high on guys like Husso or Vanacek.

Leafs are in a bad position to improve their roster.

They have one bullet, and it’s Nylander. Too many holes to fill.

If the refs are truly out to screw us we could have Bergeron and he’d be suspended. I just read a piece about moving JT to the wing and I love the idea of him and Naz on line. Never happen but….

It is likely that Dubas will find a way to dispose of Mrazek’s deal with a number of teams looking for goaltending

- Scabeh

I don't think it'll be as hard as people think

Same poop with Ritchie. Leafs ended up getting a rental that would have cost a 3rd or 4th for a 2nd.

Don't think GM's actually think that was the real Mrazek last year and a team with cap space would be smart to take the bet while grabbing some okay assets from the Leafs.
