No they couldnt because if you look at the NHL Cap for that year, Umberger was buried in the minors and the team was still at the cap limit. They didnt have the space for Hartnell
Only $950,000 of Umberger's cap hit was buried. Hartnell's cap hit was $150,000 more than Umberger's normal hit. If he was still on the team they could've made it work.
Why the (frank) am I still bothering to re-litigate a move that has had little effect on the franchise as it currently stands.
His interest is in driving his price up lol - hereticpride
Well, no issue trying to drive the price up. Looks like Babcock got 8 yrs @ 50 million. I'm Quenneville got 6 yrs @ with potential bonuses to 7 million/yr. They will probably need to offer Trotz 8 million or more to get him. I'm not sure Winnipeg ownership would be willing to go that high.
Flying to Philadelphia for an interview is not common courtesy. This isnt like driving 15-20 mins to a job interview. - xShoot4WarAmpsx
If the Flyers offer him 10M a year then sure he might come here but that's not happening. Significantly more money then any other team offers is all that would get him here. He will have 3 to 5 options and likelihood is Flyers would be at bottom or near bottom of desirable situations. Ask yourself what can we offer other then $$$$. No elite players..average young players...no cap space..untraceable vets.

The promise that Bobby Clarke will be your bestest buddy if you come here?
So the 15-16 team couldn't have used Hartnell in the playoffs? He scored 23 goals that year. What impact players did the Flyers sign with the cap flexibility of the Umberger buyout? Hell if they bought out Hartnell the same way CBJ did maybe they wouldn't thrown so much money at Kevin Hayes. - TobyFlenderson
Flyers were in a cap clearing draft and develop phase. Hextall was attempting to get younger. Clear up the cap and focus on drafting and developing. Your Hayes comment doesn't make sense. Having Hartnell that year wouldn't have changed much.

Will the Saint get another GM job after he is fired from the Pens?

No coach makes close to 10 mill. I doubt thats the offer. Maybe 5-6 mill. He only made something like 4 mill in New York and lack of talent on New York didnt deter him from signing there. They missed the playoffs and had the worst GA in the league. That was WITH Tavares on the team.
Flyers offer many things, money, a say in building the team, a challenge for a coach whos won a cup, a chance to play the Islanders 8x a year and good core of young players. I assure you our young players are not average. They just arent elite

I doubt he is going to hold a grudge and cares about playing the Isles 8 times a year factoring into his decision.
You're not understanding the Hartnell deal. Flyers were clear of the cap with Umberger in 17/18. Hartnell was stuck on Columbus cap until 20/21
Hextall added Provorov, Sanheim, Hart, Lindblom , Farabee, Frost and about a dozen NHL players in 5 drafts. With the potential for more still. He set this team up with a solid group of young players. - MJL

He had no plan. That is clear as day. He didn't rebuild nor did he try to build around CC jake simmonds schenn ivan and ghost. He tried to tow the line and failed. So stop with this plan BS.
Draft and develop isnt a plan. It is what pretty much every team does. This wasn't some new way to go. - hello it's me 2050
Hextall was fired almost 4 years ago, and you still spend every day crying about him.

I dont consider TK and Ivan young players, they are vets at this point. Nothing special about that range that many other teams have as well. Nothing stands out
We only play the Islanders 3 or 4 times a year. - Feanor
It is 4 times now. I think it used to be 8 or there were talks about playing 8 divisional teams which is why I thought it was 8 or maybe it was just the shortened season?

So, to summarize, we don't want Barry Trotz to be the Flyers next head coach (if he'll even have us) and we're upset that we signed a dman for league minimum that (hopefully) ends up playing the majority for the Phantoms.
I would be the first to laugh if we lost out on a UFA because we got outbid by $775K but Seeler's signing is the least of our worries. He is a known commodity. We signed him. We have bigger issues to address.
Any chance the player we select at #5 is NHL ready in October? Haven't followed too closely.
