Flyers interviewing Trotz on Friday. I guess Chevy did not close the deal as of yet.
- Trox88

If the Flyers sign Torts, the one good thing about is, he’ll know exactly the players he wants on his team and I believe the very incompetent Chuck Fletcher will actually listen. Torts normally makes a positive impact his first couple seasons before the world around him, gets sick of him.

I'm assuming you just mistakenly replaced Torts for Trotz who is being interviewed. I really hope Barry will bring his goalie coach Mitch Korn with him. He is a difference maker. Not sure if the Isles retained him with the hiring of Lambert.

He will instill discipline, induce overachievement, bugger draft position, and continue the fantasy of contention.

Blashill has been let go. He served his purpose there, as Hakstol will in Seattle. Now why not let him serve ours here?

Yeah, Trotz.

He had a knee injury in January. Had surgery and has since returned to action, playing well. I would have no issue with the Flyers taking him at No. 5 as long as the medical exam goes fine.
- bmeltzer

Have you heard anything specifically about his skating since he returned? It wasn’t exactly a strength prior to the injury…

He's the top choice for me. Certainly an argument can be made with Trotz's style of hockey. However, this franchise has been brutal defensively for awhile. Let's get back to top 10 in GAA and let's build off that foundation. I'm confident Trotz can get that done quickly.

Trotz (during his Caps tenure): "“Teams were really clogging us up and when we needed to chip pucks and have self-retrieval we were trying to dangle. I call it analytics death. There’s a time to carry and there’s a time to self-chip it. You’ve got all the speed so self-chip it, get on the other side of the guy, and hang on to it. We were trying to dangle guys.”
- bmeltzer

There's still a place for chip and chase... but you don't want to default to it because retrieval is rarely assured. Dangling if you don't have any help is also a bad idea.

But it's not like those are the only two choices...

Most good teams these days regroup in the NZ if they're rebuffed at the blueline, then attack the blueline again as a unit. Sure beats chucking it into the zone and turning 100% possession into a 50/50 battle.

that and the injury prone rumors

He got hurt once lol.

Flyers would be lucky if Jiricek's available. A big, transition RHD is a huge future need on this team.

Personally I’m more concerned over Kemell’s shoulder than Jiricek’s knee. Some people really soured on Kemell when he came back from the injury from what I’ve read.

There is no doubt that he will. He will get buy in and that combined with better health and injury luck and the Flyers will be a much improved team. Possibly even a playoff team. Picking somewhere in the neighborhood of the middle of the first round. Combined with whatever foolish moves Fletcher makes, capped out will have the Flyers in no man's land in the NHL. Further delaying any chance of seeing a Flyers Cup win in my lifetime.

I'm far more concerned about Ristolainen being in the lineup than out of the lineup.

When Pronger and Carle played together, they were masters at the regroup and D to D passes maintaining possession while forwards are changing or regrouping. Both were really good outlet passers. I've never seen a team like the Flyers the last few years willingly give up the puck. Like you said, there are other options.

I want Trotz yesterday! This team needs to learn how to play defense and if nothing else he will bring that element with him.

More crap coming out about Arizona today about contingencies of playing in that arena. Buttman is a joke to let an NHL team play in a 4,800 seat arena for what could be up to 7 years. Revive the Nordiques!! We went to a few Flyers games up there in the early 90's and the building was always full with a great atmosphere! Thanks!

Do you think there are other factors for why the NHL wants to keep the team in Phoenix?

Certainly could happen that scenerio. An organization has to hire the best candidate for head coach at the time of a vacancy. For me that is Trotz. Now if there is an issue with scouting or team management, that would not stop me from hiring the best candidate at the time for head coach. I'm no fan of Fletcher. However, not trying to hire Trotz because of Fletcher's failures just does not make sense to me.

The sad thing is they’ll spin this into a big success because like it or not people will turn out to see their favorite NHL players play in an arena that small.

The team should’ve been sold and moved yearssssss ago.

That was my reaction as well. Don’t the Jets have a relatively small ownership group? If I were Trotz I’d say “Hey guess what. I talked to Comcast and they’re offering X more. Beat their offer.”

I don't see it that way. This next HC job for Trotz is probably his last. I think he is looking for a firm plan after he retires. He has a really good resume and is trying to leverage it. Good for him. Let's see who gets it done.

That’s certainly possible. I honestly wonder if there’s been any conversations about Trotz going back to Washington. Washington has really under performed in the playoffs since he left.

My guess is Trotz gets hired within the next 2 weeks. With my scenerio, he loses leverage as jobs get filled. I would be surprised if the next HC opening filled is not Trotz.

Trotz really would be a very on brand hire.

I’m not sure I can think of a recent franchise that’s so tone deaf to its fanbase. We have all watched a product that’s not only been distasteful in its results, but also how it plays the game.

They want to double down on the naive dream of contention, and making this the most boring unlikeable team. Do these people think fans don’t see hockey outside of Philadelphia? How some of the best teams approach the game?

I just can’t understand their line of thinking, that fans are going to line up to watch a team bereft of any stars try to shutdown teams game, after game.

Trotz cannot happen. It’s garbage hockey, that the old guard influencing this team cannot let go of.

I've heard this story before and I'd rather us go for an elite level forward anyway
