I'd rather have a Pens blog at all with anything being said at all about the Pens in it than no blog at all like quite a few teams dont have here on this site. So in that regard I appreciate RWs efforts regardless if I agree with what he's saying or not.

When he used to give two poops about his stuff enough to occasionally join the conversation he would tell me “why don’t you give it a try”. And he was right about that. Now I won’t cause I have a real job but unless I can put up or shut up he can reasonably fall back to that defense and be justified.

Montreal's blogger seems to think that Montreal wont be interested in Letang. Says signing him to big money wouldnt make sense given where Montreal's at within their rebuild/retool.

I think geno comes back. I think they can resign rickell (who was a nice fit) too. But if i am detroit, i throw a # that starts with a 7 at rust. If i am montreal, its a full court press on letang. I offer him $9.5-10M/yr and bring in local advertisers and pitch how much marketing $$ he, his wife and son can make.

As for dumo, i hope they can off load that last year of $4.1M. Kappy, seems like a nice kid. hard pass though. DeSmith? another person who seems very nice. but i wish him well in his new city.

If letang leaves, who could they sign? Klingberg is a UFA. is there a trade for vince dunn? would vegas trade shea theodore (they are already over the cap)?

I think Rust gets 7M myself. He's pretty high up on the list of UFAs, especially RW.

Yeah not good. I still don't know how that wasn't goalie interference. If I was a player, just sbump any goalies head, good goal.

Thank god you're not the Detroit GM. Who has Rust played with the last few seasons? You think he would come even remotely close to those numbers with Pius Suter as his center? Spending that kind of money on a winger when you don't have a decent 2nd line center and the left side of the defense needs to be vastly improved would be a waste of money. Anyone that doesn't have a top end offensive center to play him with would regret paying him that kind of money pretty quick.

Rust has bad contract written all over his situation.

I think the only way he stays a Penguin is every GM shows restraint, and there will always be some with the pressure to do something now.

You can’t agree to pay Malkin more than Guentzel and still claim you believe in value deals.

Yeah, they don't really make sense for Letang. I'm sure Letang will have a bevy of offers if wants to move on.

Guentzel is way underpaid. He’s a huge value deal. If your benchmark is you can only sign players to the same value as Jake, you’re gonna have a bad time. The only two guys that would still be here are Sid and Letang.

Depends. GMs showed pretty good restraint last summer.

Here are what some rate production comparables make:

Vrana - 5.25m
Buchnevich - 5.8m
DeBrincat - 6.4m
Kreider - 6.5m
Meier - 6m

Obviously these were mostly RFA signings but I would be very disappointed if Yzerman signed him to more than 4 x 6.5m

Guys who pace consistently at 35+ goals start with at least a $7M number. At least.

Jake probably gets low $8s on the open market and I’m probably being a little conservative.

I think he's going to get 7. Maybe longer term brings him back down to 6/6.5ish, like 6 years or more.

Kasperi Kapanen's minimum QO is $840K. You qualify him and if he gives any trouble, sianora.

The remaining NHL ready RFA's, Heinen, Joseph, and Nylander, shouldn't be a major problem. Heinen you'll most likely be able to sign. He's going to get a bump, but he should still be reasonable.

You sure? I thought qualifying offers had to be more than the current contract amount...perhaps I'm completely out to lunch on that hahah or there's stipulations I'm not aware of that apply to Kap.

IIRC the problem for Kap is he’s arbitration eligible. Imo they need to move him by the draft.

His base salary was only 800k.

It’s irrelevant though. In this case a QO is simply there to retain his rights.

Ah, bonuses n' sh!t. I just figured they would factor into the overall picture.

Would he really get more than 3.2 mill per in arbitration? 32 points in basically a full season (3 games shy) getting top 6 minutes for stretches of time.

If he could be had for 1.5 or less I think I'd keep him.
