On the other hand, you are paying young players for hitting targets, so that shows improvements.
The Habs will not need cap space for years with Weber and Price on LTIR.....

Problem is, if memory serves, LTIR doesn't apply until the start of the season. Whereas those big numbers drop at season's start, you can only spend 10% over the cap before that. So yeah, you can use the LTIR space to buy up what's left once the season starts, but it's still dead weight in the off season. |

that's probably the detail that I was missing... at least in Weber's case the cap hit will be minimal in the last years of his contract |

as far as I know, cap hit always remain the same for the duration of a contract. He will receive less in term of salary, but who cares other than him?

Habs ain't gonna pick up a big free agent in the next year or two, I am not concerned, plus some other contracts will come off the books by then.

ahh (frank) you're right, only the base salary changes but the cap hit remains the same, which is why it would be interesting for a team like Arizona who is trying to reach the cap floor but doesn't want to actually spend a lot... apparently this transaction with the coyotes will be completed during the summer |

The cap stays the same for the duration of the contract.
The payout in salary is less.
That is why a team like Arizona, who would get his large cap hit and actually play him relatively little in dollars, want a contract like that to hit the salary floor (and yet, still pay less in actual salary).
Shea Weber’s contract has a Cap Hit of $7.857M for another four years after this 2021-2022 season but only has to be paid a total of six million in actual dollars during that span. That’s extremely attractive to a team like Arizona, whose new arena deal with Arizona State University will inhibit them from being able to spend much higher than 60M in player salaries for the foreseeable future. |

that's what I finally figured out, thanks
let's hope ARZ doesn't choke again during the summer, apparently they were going to grab Weber's contract at the deadline but backed out last minute |

If I were Hughes, i'd sign Mr.Peanut to one year contract so he could finish his career with his hometown team. He'd be cheap also for what he actually brings. We all know he is an exciting player to watch and he'd be perfect on a losing team. He also knows how to help the youth grow. |
