"This year we’ve had a really tough year. What I can tell you is two things. I guess, on a macro level, first of all, the man I work for, Dave Scott, he’s given us everything in terms of resources, the ability to spend to the cap, we have a great development staff, we brought Danny (Briere) in, we brought new analytics people in, we brought new medical, a new athletic trainer, new strength and conditioning. So, we are trying to do our best to bring in the best resources in, have the best staff, and we’ll spend to the cap." - Chuck Fletcher 2 months ago
Yeah, that new medical, trainer, s&c .....not working out so well it would seem. Great hires! - Flyerfan2868
Not only did he fail in his GM hockey on ice Duties. He failed in all those other areas as well. What a complete failure.
What's funny is I do not htink they gave any consideration into firing him in any way.

players, not coaches. - hello it's me 2050
I feel like that has to include everything. There is no "blank check" when it comes to players. It can only be no more than a specific amount. So I think it points even more to coaches and the overall amenities of the franchise from staff to facilities etc.

Spending to the cap is the dumbest thing this franchise can do. It is infuriating to hear it coming out of the mouth of this GM.

In theory yes. For public appearances that is the main talking point. We will spend to get the players. He have a blank check. That gets the uninformed crowd all fired up and happy.
flyers still cleraly think you can buy your way to success.

Comcast Flyers announce the groundbreaking news: Flyers have increased their analytics department by 300% and will now officially be the first professional sports team to employ a computer as the head coach. Strictly numbers driven and no personality or feel for the game needed. Now Scott’s “blank check” makes perfect sense. |

Might be an improvement considering they got to this point by making decisions strictly with their gut and their "feel for the game".

Ha. Russians hate "small talk" and that is likely how he saw these questions. You have your "expert" opinions and I have mine. Very funny. - iamscore2day
His interview was much deeper than that little snippet, but leave it up to "journalists" to make a mountain out of mole hill.
I am also a Russian speaker, and yes it's customarily to be to the point and avoid "small talk"

There is no issues spending to the cap. Most contenders do. The difference is spending to the cap on the right players.
Im a fan of Hayes but its hard to justify the contract based on the production.
JVR is another player we are paying 7 mill for and on a healthy team, he was typically on the 3rd line. This was a poor signing from day one.
We could reallocate 14 mill with just these 2 players removed. Hayes would leave a hole on the team but JVR in reality does not fit on the Flyers anymore, especially at 7 mill. JVR is not a top 6 winger IMO. He is too one dimensional and there are cheaper options for the bottom 6. |

No need to watch the playoffs when your loser team hasn't made it out of the first round SINCE 2004!!!!! It's stunning that those losers haven't been to the second round since! Damn, that was a pleasure watching JR roof that shot to silence all those Laff losers!! Good luck in the playoffs....I hope you get swept and embarrassed! Jerkweed! Thanks! |

Wouldn't it be nice for Chuckie to be asked hard questions. There are so many. Let's wait till hell freezes over for those to be asked. - iamscore2day
There were plenty of "hard questions " asked at Chuck Fletcher's post-deadline press conference. There's a segment of the fan base, not saying you, that seems to think anything short of "Why haven't you resigned or been fired yet?" is a softball.

Well you, not generalizing everyone, I mean YOU dwelling on the 4th liners and bottom defensive pairs year after year is not constructive criticism for the team with this many issues. Complaining about one 4th liner day after day minimizes the importance of more important issues with this team.
- Glak18
I think you're confused. One about ME, I mean ME dwelling on 4th liners and bottom defensive pairs. More importantly, if you don't think that the bottom defensive pair matters with Yandle at a -45 this season, well then you're simply ignorant.
Why is it not as important? Because it can easily be corrected with one simple transaction. Even if the Flyers build a so-called "best 4th line in hockey" it is not changing the dynamic of this losing team that much, no matter how much you want to believe it. Why? Because even if it does get changed they will still look terrible and have bad analytics when the rest of the team is the same. - Glak18
You seem to be confused again here. I have not questioned the level of importance nor have I disagreed with anyone who feels it is not at the top of the list of the Flyers issues. I have only disagreed with those who have completely dismissed it in ignorance, such as yourself. A good 4th line can help the analytics of any team. Including a bad one. The Flyers 4th line is a part of why they're a bad team.

That is what this FO is likely to do except it will be a former flyer again. I would like to see them get the guy from UMD, Sandelin. But our FO is not the kind of group to go that way IMO. Of the retread list you put out there, I would take Torts for the reasons I have noted. - iamscore2day
Sandelin has won 3 NCAA championships in the last 11 years. No one else has won more than one. He has some history with the Flyers. Sandy gets everything out of every player and they want to play for him. A helluva coach. He’s said he’d be interested in the NHL. Maybe teams waited too long, he’s almost 58.

Just from an entertainment point of view, which is why most of us watch. Is Tortorella hockey something that you really want the team to commit to for the next number of years? Winning a few more low scoring games to pick 13th overall should not be the goal here.
After having to endure Hakstol, and Vigneault for me it's a resounding no. I understand the team doesn't have the same level of talent but after watching hockey from Florida, or Colorado Tortorella is not the way the league is moving.
Rebuild, and for once try to emulate a modern approach to the game. The hockey we watched in the 80's, and 90's is not the NHL today. - FlyerFan3260
I agree that Tortorella is not a cutting edge attack type of coach but he would be good for this team in one way. He would fix this teams defensive zone coverage issues. The issue is that why sign a coach that would take a significant term deal for a guy that is short term, or should be.

Hakstol is in my opinion a poor NHL head coach. Not as horrific as some painted him out to be, but I have my concerns. Perhaps a decent assistant, but we will likely never know because it's only a matter of time until Seattle moves on. He is not surviving what's likely the next few years of planned hardship with the Kraken.
Will another team give him a head coach chance after his time with the Flyers added to that resume?
I'm not sure I see it. - FlyerFan3260
Hakstol did far more with less talent here than AV and Yeo did with more.
