Friedman speaks a little bit about his comments recently. More or less how his understanding is that Ivan is a player who feels he has done everything he can to improve the team the past few years. That he feels he is getting an unwarranted amount of blame.

Ivan could have played much better. Is he a quality first pairing defenseman at this stage? I am not sure I would call him that after the last couple seasons.

Would I be annoyed with such questions to myself, and my teammates then see the front office get a complete pass every time? It was clear as day Vigneault, and Therrien needed to go but there were not a shred of accountability demanded from those covering the team. It's just wildly frustrating as a fan, especially when other markets show a willingness to demand accountability from more than just the players on the ice.

O'Connor has shown to really be the only one to approach being willing to take them to task. Will see tomorrow.

Wouldn't it be nice for Chuckie to be asked hard questions. There are so many. Let's wait till hell freezes over for those to be asked.

He would be the perfect fit for a lot of the old guard influencing the team. Fixations about grit, and the Bullies that many of us grew up cheering for are still rampant.

It's really a terrifying concept for a team that struggles to ice an entertaining product, or milk every ounce of creative talent from its young players. Tortorella just cannot happen. I don't have any personal distate for the man, but he should not coach for the Flyers. Not when the team is going to be forced into a rebuild either way soon enough.

Fletcher can speak of aggressive retools but reality is a different story.

Torts imo would be AV v2

I don't, at least not the pre Chuck players. These guys wouldn't handle being pushed like he likely would push them. Many are weak minded imo. Same crap year after year. Until they are flushed out not much will change on the ice.
- hello it's me 2050

I agree that he will push them. But I don't think you get to this level without toughness, mental and physical. We need someone who knows talent to figure out who should stick and who should walk. He knows good players and can be expected to sort them out on that basis. Plus, he hates complacency. If a player is there just for the check, they will be gone. Our management team just does not have its big boy pants on for a ride like Torts would give us and them. Yeo is what they like: he shows up at a season-ending press conference when his team is a turd in the punch bowl and says that even Scotty B could not have won with them. Pretty ironic since the last team he coached was also playing miserably when he got canned and they went on to win the SC. We are such a joke.

With all due respect, that's all true, but who cares? It doesn't matter. On the list of Flyers' issues, the fourth line is pretty far down the list.
- Scoob

Considering that they don't exactly have a lot of cap space to address some of the bigger problems, biting around the edges and fixing the 4th-line/3rd-pair would probably be a good place to start this summer.

He will be hard on them but he is not the a-hole that AV is. I think it would work out better for the players than many folks think.

Just from an entertainment point of view, which is why most of us watch. Is Tortorella hockey something that you really want the team to commit to for the next number of years? Winning a few more low scoring games to pick 13th overall should not be the goal here.

After having to endure Hakstol, and Vigneault for me it's a resounding no. I understand the team doesn't have the same level of talent but after watching hockey from Florida, or Colorado Tortorella is not the way the league is moving.

Rebuild, and for once try to emulate a modern approach to the game. The hockey we watched in the 80's, and 90's is not the NHL today.

That is what this FO is likely to do except it will be a former flyer again. I would like to see them get the guy from UMD, Sandelin. But our FO is not the kind of group to go that way IMO. Of the retread list you put out there, I would take Torts for the reasons I have noted.

If Hasktol had the kind of goaltending that AV and Yeo had, the last 2 years would have been a lot better.

With all due respect and fondness Scoob. That is a very poorly thought out opinion. I can see if it's coming from someone who has no clue but that's not you.
- MJL

Thanks - I probably put it out there wrong - it's not really a "who cares" issue. My point is that yes, there are benefits to making changes to the fourth line (some of which you pointed out above) and it can be done rather easily in-house (mostly with changes in coaching and decision-makers who understand development better than the current group), but it's not the most vexing issue the Flyers have right now.

Hakstol is in my opinion a poor NHL head coach. Not as horrific as some painted him out to be, but I have my concerns. Perhaps a decent assistant, but we will likely never know because it's only a matter of time until Seattle moves on. He is not surviving what's likely the next few years of planned hardship with the Kraken.

Will another team give him a head coach chance after his time with the Flyers added to that resume?

I'm not sure I see it.

Gronborg out of Sweden would be a good one. He went to college and played hockey in NA before going back to Sweden to help remake their national team with a lot of success. Currently coaching one of the top teams in Europe (Zurich, where Auston Matthews played).

Carbery from the Leafs is a rising star. Recently won AHL coach of the year.

Everybody loves Lane Lambert for some reason.

Benoit Groulx has been pretty successful w/ Syracuse.

There are a ton of other names out there in the junior and minor pro ranks. The options go beyond the same old dozen guys that always get talked about.

If your roof leaks at home but the light is out in the bathroom, do you not put in a new light bulb because the roof is leaking?
- MJL

No, of course not. I replace the bulb right away without any thought about it because it's an easily fixed issue. I would not, however, let it distract me or take time away from fixing the real issue. The new bulb doesn't make my house measurably better. The fixed roof does.

Time will tell. My main point is that he was painted out to be worse than he was while he coached here. For this year, Seattle was a team built to lose and they did. However, he got more goals and gave up fewer than the Flyers with markedly less talent. In particular, his 2 goalies were rated below both of our goalies in save %.

Realistically I think you see either Tocchet, Julien or Tortorella in that order.

Torts is a guy you hire when you're on the cusp of contention and your vets need a swift kick in the ass. A team like Winnipeg.

By the time the Flyers get their poop together, the entire team would have already tuned Torts out. His shelf life is 24-36 months.

Are there a lot of Euro coaches who come over here and do well? With the larger rink, the Euro leagues play a very different style of game. It would be interesting, that is for sure. The AHL guys sound pretty good. It was interesting to see how well the Wild's hire has done. Of course, KK makes a lot of coaches look smart.

Friedman does have decent insight, which is why I choose to listen to his stuff.

Regarding Winnipeg he alluded to a number of players requesting to be traded at this deadline. If anyone heard what Scheifele had to say he is more than likely one of those players.

Of all the really experienced ones, Maurice is my favorite, but as you correctly point out, there are new options out there. Most of all, I hope the hiring process is open-minded and has multiple candidates.

Agreed. I just fear the front office will hire him as some sort of 'selling point' to the fans. "We know the team sucks but come watch for our coach! He might start a fight between periods! Stay tuned for his post game press conferences too, he'll yell at some writers or say nothing at all!"
