I guess you're implying that he would rather sign a shorter-term contract to potentially get a bigger paycheque with the next one after that...? makes sense, but some players do see a lot of value in long-term stability. that being said I agree it's unlikely they go that route
- Pat1993

I think he can make a lot more money than that in a few years. Young players like that only sign long term for Suzuki money,

I doubt he would sign the last one. Other than that, what are the comparables for him?
- deadpoulet

I'm thinking maybe Chris Tanev, who signed a 5 years @4.45M at age 25 or so?

Adam Pelech? Signed around 1.6M early, for 4 years, then signed 5.75 at age 26.

I get what you're saying, but it's a very different situation for a young dman such as Romanov. he's been playing well and has been progressing nicely, but he isn't necessarily putting up a whole lot of points on the board, so he'll surely have a lot less leverage than Suzuki in his contract negotiations...

Romanov is only 22 and was use as mtl first defenseman by the end of the season.

I think they will go with a bridge deal and see what they have with the other young d.

I wasn't trying to prove a point, I was just thinking of similar defensemen. If he bridge, I guess we could be looking at a 2 years/ 6M contract first.

This may be overly optimistic, my one consistent, but I am extremely impressed by the prospect pool. Not to mention a few more to be added this draft. This rebuild may proceed quicker than many believe. Also thank you Karine. Outstanding work

love hearing that kind of optimism, because according to most in here we're in for a rather slow and painful process. it could be the case, but I also think this team has the potential to make it a much smoother ride than anticipated.

Based on Romanov’s comments about wanting to improve his offense, I would assume he’s looking for a 2-3 year bridge. He likely sees himself putting up more points during that bridge and then being able to negotiate a long-term contract from a stronger position at the end of that contract.

I don't see Romanov putting much more points on the board. maybe 20, but that's it. he's a defensive dman, hits hard, blocks shots, plays pk... we'll have better options to play PP minutes.

Chris Phillips, Josh Gorges, Craig Rivet style. Defensive leader.

Also right as I'm typing this Archer makes a reference to Guy Lafleur

it's still early to tell, especially for a dman since they usually take more time to develop, but yeah Romanov has never really been particularly offensive-minded throughout his career, so chances are his numbers might slightly increase but nothing major.

I'm surprised though his point production prior to the NHL wasn't a bit higher than that, as he does have a decent shot, and he seems to be a smart-enough player to be well-positioned and make plays.

he could probably improve, but we'll have better options.
if Romanov is on your 1st PP unit.... you're in trouble.

yeah he isn't the second coming of Andrei Markov, that's for sure lol

it's ok though, he does have a valuable skillset and should still play an important role on the team.

No reason to think he cannot put up 30 points if the team around him actually SCORES.
