there is nothing simple about it - homiedclown
It probably helps that I've run multiple sports leagues where I had to figure out the playoff bracket based on an odd number of teams qualifying.
It's not difficult though as it is all about how you get to your final four teams. |

I wish the NHL would adopt what the NBA is doing with having the top 6 teams make the playoffs and 7 - 10 needing to qualify via a play-in.
The change I'd make is the play-in would be 2 game series with the higher seed getting both home games, and only needing to win once to advance, while the lower seed would need to win twice to advance. - kingcong39
best of 3 for play in makes sense
higher seed gets games 1 and 3
even baseball's play in, made no sense to play 162 games and let 1 game decide who gets in and who gets out |

they need a 32nd team and then treat it like nhl
I don't care if they treat it like nhl from the 80's where top 4 teams get in and play each other
or modify it where top 2 seeds get byes and 3-6 play for the other two spots
it shouldn't be that hard
a second seed should either all get byes or none
etc

It's impossible for it to work that way when an odd number of teams qualify, but you already know that. |

It's not difficult, but I also wouldn't call it fair. It's a minor league, guess it doesn't have to be.

Talking this through, what would you consider fair?
https://theahl.com/22playoffprimer
Take the top 12 teams from each conference (North + South, Central + West), with the top 4 teams getting a bye and the bottom 8 playing an opening round?
Add a team and balance the divisions so each has 8 teams, then take the top 6 from each division, with the top team only getting a bye and the bottom 5 playing an opening round?
Are you changing the schedule to balance it more appropriately based on whatever updated format you go with?
Would that mean more travel for the teams, and can they sustain that added cost financially?
You'll notice I'm not mentioning reducing the number of playoff teams, because when you open the doors to owners gaining added revenue, especially via playoff home game ticket sales, it's unlikely that door closes and the owners accept losing revenue. |

move a team from pacific to central, it would be no worse then having manitoba go to texas
add the 32nd team to the north
8 teams each division
1 and 2 seeds get byes
3 plays 6
4 plays 5
easy pleasy

I am too lazy to back read (way too much talk about AHL playoffs). What has to happen for Roch to get in? |

They need to win out.
Other teams need to lose.

Rochester wins tonight.
Toronto loses in regulation tomorrow night, as just getting to OT will get Toronto in. |
